[Future problems of medical genetics].

The following future problems of medical genetics can be identified: 1. Description and analysis of new genetic diseases, especially in developing countries 2. Biochemical analysis, especially of dominant diseases 3. Elucidation of genetic causes for common diseases and their interaction with specific environmental factors (drugs and other chemicals). In the near future it will be possible to provide every newborn with a list of specific advises for prevention of health hazards; this list will be based on the genetic polymorphisms and their impact on health and disease.

Electron microscopic visualization of the arrangement of the two protein components of (Na+ + K+)-ATPase.

The information obtained by electron microscopic examination of highly purified membrane preparations of (Na+ + K+)-ATPase after freeze-fracturing or negative staining suggests the following conclusions. The catalytic 100 000 dalton protein component penetrates with its greater 'globular' mass the plasma membrane and protudes with its smaller mass from the protoplasmic surface by a stalked knob carrying the catalytic centre. The 40 000 dalton glycoprotein component is anchored in the membrane interior by a non-pom the outer membrane surface forming a surface coat of ill-definable substructure.

[Vaginitis in the bitch (author's transl)].

During a period of two and a half years (2 1/2), sixty-two patients wre submitted to the Department of Veterinary Obstetrics and Gynaecology, where a diagnosis of vaginitis was established. These patients often were young large dogs. Most of the females showed a vaginal discharge, although some bitches were only very attrative to males. There were no complaints concerning the general physical condition of the patients. On clinical examination, the vulva was found to be swollen. Exudation was also frequently observed, externally (vaginoscopy). Ninety per cent of the patients showed normal haemograms. On bacteriological examination, streptococci, E. coli and pasteurellae were often isolated. As a rule the bitches were treated locally (deeply intravaginal), the choice of the drug depending on the results of bacteriological examination. Another bacteriological examination was made after treatment. An inquiry was made into the results of treatment in these sixty-two dogs, wherever possible. On the other hand, the prognosis in those bitches in which bacteriological examination is negative at the time of discharge from the department is likely to be better than it is in those in which bacteriological examination is still positive at that time. The extent to which vaginitis may influence fertility is not known at the time of writing. The differential diagnosis of vaginitis and endometritis may present difficulties.

Some effects of prostaglandin on corpora lutea and on the uterus in the cycling dog.

The effect of prostaglandin PGF2alpha was investigated on the progesterone production in the corpora lutea and on the occurrence of amino acids and carbohydrates in the uteri of seven beagles in metoestrus (D-36 to D-42). The dose, 15 mg in all (3 X 5 mg with intervals of 1 and 24 hours), was injected i.m. After ovariectomy and hysterectomy it appeared that 5 hours after the last injection in conversion of pregenolone into progesterone in the corpora lutea was greatly reduced that in the uterus much more fructose, glucose, and glucuronic acid was present than could by expected at the time of the cycle. After 24 hours the progesterone production was still low and in the uterus the fructose production had increased and lactic acid was formed. Four days after the last injection, the progesterone production in the corpora lutea was normal again and the amounts of fructose and of glucose in the uterus showed the normal values; the concentrations of glucuronic acid and of lactic acid were still elevated, but they were reducing. Seemigly 15 mg of PGF2alpha injected i.m. in dogs caused a temporary blocking of progesterone production in the corpora lutea, accompanied by the formation of glucuronic acid in the uteri van zeven beagles in metoestrus (D-36 - D142). De dosis bedroeg in total 15 mg (3 X 5 small amounts of fructose and of lactic acid in the uterus.

Ultrastructure of unfixed plasma membranes in ultrathin frozen sections.

Ultrathin sections of unfixed kidney tubular cells were obtained by cryo-ultramicrotomy using the 'wet' method. The results showed that extremely thin sections permit high resolution studies on unfixed plasma membranes. Structural units on the inner surface of the plasma membrane could be detected.

Formal genetics of Fanconi's anemia.

UNLABELLED: The formal genetics of Fanconi's anemia were investigated on the basis of 21 families from different European countries, and of 69 families from the literature. CONCLUSIONS: 1. The result of segregation analysis is compatible with the hypothesis of a simple autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. 2. The number of sporadic cases is not greater than expected. 3. Among the affected siblings in the sibships analyzed, males are somewhat more frequent than females. However, this sex difference is also found among the unaffected siblings, and it is not statistically significant. 4. Contrary to assertions made in the literature, there is no clustering of affected in the sequence of siblings, no maternal age effect, and no preference of higher birth orders. 5. A high intrafamilial correlation for age at onset, and (very probably) number and severity of malformations points to genetic heterogeneity. Apart from the standard type, an especially mild type with late onset, few malformations, and a relatively benign course seems to exist. Its counterpart is possibly an especially severe type with early onset, many malformations, and a malignant course. However, definite conclusions on the special character of this heterogeneity will require application of additional methods.

Detection of IgG antibodies against pigeon intestinal mucosa antigens in pigeon breeders' sera using the immunofluorescent technique.

The serum of 102 pigeon breeders was examined for circulating IgG antibodies against antigens localized in pigeon intestine by the indirect immunofluorescent technique. 15 symptomatic breeders with a positive response to inhalation challenge had antibodies against mucosa tissue. The majority of asymptomatic breeders demonstrated either a fluorescence of intestinal excrements combined with a weak fluorescence of mucosa tissue or had no detectable antibodies in their serum. By the indirect immunofluorescence, antibodies were found more frequently than by immunoprecipitin reactions in agar.

ABO blood groups and chicken pox.

In 974 patients with chicken pox (varicellae) from four large children's hospitals in Germany, a weak association with blood groups A (and probably AB) was found.
