Hurthle cell adenoma of the thyroglossal duct.

Neoplasia in thyroglossal duct cysts or ectopic thyroid tissue deposits is rare but well recognized. The first known case of Hurthle cell adenoma in thyroglossal duct anomaly is described. The pathologic course and treatment of Hurthle cell tumors in general is reviewed. Treatment was based on the view that neoplasms in thyroglossal duct remnants represent changes in the ectopic thyroid tissue.

Solitary lateral cervical cyst: presenting symptom of papillary thyroid adenocarcinoma.

Four cases of lateral cervical cysts in young women are presented. At least three of them proved to be the result of cystic degeneration of cervical lymph nodes containing metastatic papillary adenocarcinoma from the primary neoplasm in the thyroid gland. In each case, these cystic structures were the sole presenting sign of the disease. The significance of cystic metastases from papillary thyroid adenocarcinoma and their relationship to the primary tumor is discussed. The pathogenesis of these cystic metastases, their clinical setting, and differentiation from congenital cysts are emphasized.

Epidermal cysts of temporal fossa: an unusual complication of ear surgery.

Otologic procedures have been described as etiologic factors in the development of epidermal cysts in the middle ear as well as in the tympanic membrane. We recently treated two cases of large epidermal cysts of the temporal fossa with extension to the infratemporal space; both cases had histories of ear surgery on the same side as the cysts and therefore the cysts are presumed to have originated from implanted epidermal elements at the time of surgery.

Septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein.

Septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein is a rare condition with diverse etiologies. The significance of the systemic effects of this condition far exceeds its local implications. Complications occur frequently and may be life threatening. The pathogenesis, histologic features, clinical and imaging aspects of this entity, based on a series of 13 patients, are discussed.

Primary Schwannoma of the thyroid gland.

A primary Schwannoma of the thyroid gland caused severe dyspnea due to tracheal compression and deviation. The thyroid gland is a very rare site of origin for this tumor, and to the best of our knowledge this report represents the first documented case of a Schwannoma with such symptomatology.
