Traditional medicine and the modern medical curriculum.

Experience in Sokoto suggests that traditional medicine can be successfully introduced as a distinct academic discipline into the curriculum of a modern African medical school. The importance of such a step lies in two facts. Firstly, for the foreseeable future most people in developing countries will turn to traditional medicine at times of sickness, so modern doctors should be acquainted with its principles and methods. Secondly, within traditional medicine there is a body of important knowledge that needs to be explored and studied. If exposed early and gradually to the subject, medical students are likely to become more effective both as health workers and as contributors to medical science.

Vesicovaginal fistula in Nigerian children.

Of 80 cases of vesicovaginal fistula in children less than thirteen years of age in Northern Nigeria, 48 were due to labour, 12 to the traditional practice of gishiri cutting, and 20 to other causes including congenital abnormalities, coitus, infections, and trauma. Preventive measures include improved socioeconomic status of the community, education, and reevaluation of the role of females in society.

Camel injuries.

Camels use their teeth to bite, lift and throw their enemies, their feet to kick, paw or trample over, their whole body to knock over, press and squeeze, and their spit or regurgitated food to cover their perceived adversaries. Camel injuries can be very serious, resulting in fractures and severe lacerations of skin, muscle, tendons and nerves. Deaths have been reported.

Epidemiological determinants of vesicovaginal fistulas.

Between 1969 and 1980 1443 patients with vesicovaginal fistulas were operated on in Ahmadu Bello University Hospital in Northern Nigeria. They have been studied in relation to their obstetric, social and environmental background. The preventable nature of the lesion was explored particularly with respect to age, parity and obstructed labour, and to traditional practices including 'gishiri cutting', which alone accounts for 13% of all the fistulas. Vesicovaginal fistulas are still a major cause for concern in many developing countries; measures for prevention include universal education and improved status of women in society as well as improved and accessible medical services.
