[Facial wounds. Statistical and aetiological study of 1488 cases (author's transl)].

Study of 1,488 cases of facial injuries treated in the Department of Maxillofacial surgery of the Montpellier Teaching Hospital Centre, led the authors to draw certain conclusions with regard to causes one the one hand and secondly the individuals involved. Road accidents were by far the largest cause, accounting for 70.2% of facial wounds. Domestic accidents took second place at 13%, followed by brawls and attacks as well as work accidents (each approximately 5%).

Sagittal splitting and bicortical screw fixation of the ascending ramus.

We describe here a procedure for osteosynthesis following sagittal splitting of the ascending ramus of the mandible. We use screws inserted through both cortical plates. The intraoral approach is combined with our method of transcutaneous drilling. The survey of our 6 years' experience showing the correction thus obtained provides very satisfactory long term stability.

[The correction of traumatic loss of substance from the auricle of the ear (author's transl)].

Simple and reliable repair techniques are described, selected for their simplicity, rapidity and the quality of the results obtained. For losses of substance of the helix, reduction of the pavillion (Antia) or a flat retro-auricular flap suffice for a limited loss, whilst miniature tubular flaps give a good result in cases of total loss. For the concha and the lobule, flat mastoid flaps (Rao-Preaux) are very simple to carry out. Following amputation, a broad, long Crikelair mastoid flap and Converse's tunnelisation procedure may be used to reconstruct the upper 2/3 and mastoid flaps (Preaux-Brent) the lower 1/3.

[Epitheliomas of the retro-molar trigone and of the inside surface of the cheeks (author's transl)].

The authors have made a study of 53 cases of tumours of the retro-molar trigone and of the internal surface of the cheeks which were treated between 1959 and 1972; these were malphigian epitheliomas except for one case of cylindroma. The research is concerned with the choice of methods and the therapeutic indications. Retro-molar trigones call for combined telecobaltherapy-electrontherapy;--curie-therapy is too difficult in this area. Electrontherapy may be used on alternate days with telecobaltherapy or as a booster dose after external irradiation by cobaltherapy. In cases of epitheliomas of the cheek, curietherapy or electrontherapy may be used after external irradiation or in isolation for tumours which are small in size. Therapeutic results are satisfactory in lesions at the outset (7/8 and 7/9), for T1-T2. For advanced lesions T3 of the trigone (6/16) and especially for those of the internal surface of the cheeks (2/9), the success rate is considerably lower; in lesions of the T4 type, a palliative effect was obtained but without any definite improvement.
