[Three-dimensional volumetric display--a new application of frequency up-conversion].

This paper discusses the present research situation and the application prospect of 3-D volumetric display technology. The possible usability and science significance of frequency up-conversion in 3-D volumetric display field are also demonstrated systematically. In ZBLAN: Pr, Yb glasses, we primarily demonstrated and achieved a new application of frequency up-conversion three dimensional volumetric display, using the two-frequency up-conversion of the rare earth ions. The efficiency of luminescence of Pr was enhanced much by the energy transfer between Pr and Yb ions.

[Indirect sensitized upconversion in Tm3+ and Yb3+ codoped non-crystal pentaphosphate].

We report the blue upconversion luminescence of Tm3+ and Yb3+ codoped non-crystal pentaphosphate pumped by -798nm laser diode. The samples were directly excited to 3F4 level of Tm3+ ion. Two energy transfer processes between Tm3+ and Yb3+ contribute mainly to the population of 1G4 level of Tm3+. Phonon plays an important role in the upconversion process.

Prophylactic removal of impacted third molars: an assessment of published reviews.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate published reviews of the appropriateness of prophylactic removal of impacted third molars. DESIGN: Systematic review and critical appraisal of relevant reviews. METHODS: Computerised databases (Medline and Embase), the Index to Dental Literature, and the references of articles were searched to identify relevant reviews. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pathologies associated with impacted third molars and outcomes following surgical removal of third molars. RESULTS: Twelve published reviews were assessed. Major methodological problems in these include that authors did not describe review methods such as literature search strategy and criteria for inclusion of primary studies. Reviews with similar aims included different sets of primary studies as evidence. Details of primary studies quoted were seldom sufficient for readers to judge the reliability of the evidence. With the exception of two reviews with poorer quality, the reviews concluded that there is a lack of evidence to support the prophylactic removal of impacted third molars. Two decision analyses also concluded that, on average, patients' long-term wellbeing is maximised if extraction is confined to those impacted third molars with pathology. CONCLUSIONS: In the absence of good evidence to support prophylactic removal, there appears to be little justification for the removal of pathology-free impacted third molars.

Risperidone in the treatment of schizophrenia: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

This study evaluates the relative effectiveness and side-effects of risperidone as compared with conventional neuroleptics in the treatment of schizophrenia, by meta-analysis of 11 double-blind, randomized controlled trials. The proportion of patients showing clinical improvement; use of medications for extrapyramidal side-effects (EPS); the treatment drop-out rates; and the changes in negative PANSS scores were measured. Compared with conventional neuroleptics, slightly more patients in the risperidone group showed clinical improvement [57 vs 52%; odds ratio 1.27, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04, 1.56]. The use of concomitant medications for EPS was significantly less in the risperidone group than in the conventional neuroleptic group (22.8 vs 38.4%; odds ratio 0.51, 95% CI: 0.41, 0.63). The overall drop-out rate was lower in the risperidone group than in other neuroleptic group (29.1 vs 33.9%; odds ratio 0.75, 95% CI: 0.61, 0.94). The difference in changes in negative PANSS score between the risperidone and the haloperidol group was -0.74 (95% CI: -1.50, 0.02). Weight gain and tachycardia are more common in patients treated with risperidone. Sensitivity analysis of different analytic approaches did not materially change the main estimates. It was concluded that the short-term efficacy of risperidone is comparable to other neuroleptics in the treatment of schizophrenia. It is associated with significantly fewer EPS than conventional neuroleptics (mainly haloperidol).

[Partial laryngectomy for treatment of the laryngeal cancer of T3 and T4 categories].

Between 1980 to 1993, 31 patients (27 men and 4 women) with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx with T3,4 categories undergone partial largngectomy. The 3- and 5-year survival rates were 64.5% and 59.3% respectively. The extubation rate was 71.0% and recurrence rate 19.4%. After opration, the 31 patients have acquired speech function of different degrees and the swallow function returned to normal. The authors concluded that in selected patients with T3,4 laryngeal cancers, partial laryngectomy is feasible and acceptable, which preserves all laryngeal functions and improves life quality.

Serum apolipoprotein levels of psoriatic patients with normal serum lipid levels.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies indicated that incidence of occlusive cardiovascular diseases increased in psoriasis. Changes of serum lipid metabolism may be the cause. Apolipoproteins play a central role in lipoprotein metabolism in serum. The measurement of serum apo levels may reveal the characteristics of lipoprotein metabolism in serum in patients with psoriasis and may help to find an answer to the cause of the high incidence of occlusive cardiovascular diseases in psoriasis. METHOD: The apo levels of 31 patients with psoriasis vulgaris and 31 sex- and age-matched healthy individuals with normal serum lipid levels were measured by radial immunodiffusion assay. RESULTS: The apo C III (t = 2.44, P < 0.05) and apo E (t = 2.12, P < 0.05) of psoriatic group elevated significantly. The apo C III (t = 2.77, P < 0.01) of patients less than 40-year-old and apoE (t = 2.91, P < 0.01) of male patients elevated significantly. CONCLUSION: Abnormal metabolism of lipoprotein in serum exist in psoriasis, especially in male patients and/or patients less than 40 years old.

[X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mass spectrum (MS) study of organic tin compounds II].

Seven new synthetical (Z)-1-[2-(Triarylstannyl) vinyl]-1-cycloheptanols organic tin compounds were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and mass spectrum method. The influence of different replacement radical in compounds on the d orbit of tin atom was discussed. The coordinate substance had an effect on the chemical displacement of Ols binding energy. The O-->Sn bond was affected by the different replacement radical. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and mass spectrum show that Cl, Br and I had the important action.

Differential effects of viable and killed bacteria on IL-12 expression of macrophages.

Listeria monocytogenes-specific, IFN-gamma-producing CD4+ T cells are induced in 5-day in vitro cultures of naive spleen cells with viable L. monocytogenes (VLM) but are not induced in cultures with heat killed L. monocytogenes (HKLM). Anti-IL-12 Abs abrogated the induction of the IFN-gamma-producing CD4+ T cells by VLM, suggesting an importance of IL-12 in the induction of IFN-gamma-producing CD4+ T cells. Accordingly, IL-12p40 was expressed by macrophages (M phi) from the cultures of whole spleen cells with VLM but not with HKLM, although HKLM induced IL-12p40 expression on M phi when nonadherent cells were removed before culture. In vivo analysis also showed that VLM induced IL-12p40 expression by M phi, whereas HKLM failed to induce it. On the other hand, the addition of anti-IL-10 mAb into cultures of whole spleen cells and HKLM resulted in an increase of IL-12p40 expression by M phi. Furthermore, we detected an expression of IFN-gamma by both adherent and nonadherent spleen cells at the early stage of stimulation with VLM before the appearance of IFN-gamma-producing CD4+ T cells. These data suggest that HKLM induce nonadherent spleen cells to produce IL-10 which may down-regulate IFN-gamma-producing CD4+ T cells by blocking IL-12 production by M phi. In contrast, VLM support IFN-gamma production by CD4+ T cells by stimulating M phi to produce IL-12 and IFN-gamma.

Down-regulation of Listeria monocytogenes-specific Th1 cytokine response by treatment of mice with goat antibody to mouse IgD.

Injection of goat anti-mouse IgD antibody (G alpha M IgD) to mice has been shown to induce polyclonal IgG1 and IgE production by B cells and IL-4 production by goat Ig-specific T cells. Surface IgD crosslinking also activates function of B cells as antigen presenting cells. Although the G alpha M IgD treatment is a well established system for regulation of immune response against antigens that bind to B cell receptor, we found that the G alpha M IgD treatment also influences immune response against irrelevant bacterial antigen. The T cells from the G alpha M IgD-treated Listeria monocytogenes-infected mice showed increased IL-4 production and decreased IFN-gamma and IL-2 production against listerial antigen compared with those from control L. monocytogenes-infected mice. Interestingly, changes were also found in antigen presenting cells in the G alpha M IgD-treated mice. MHC class II expression of both B cells and macrophages decreased significantly in the G alpha M IgD-treated mice, suggesting cytokine induced by G alpha M IgD-treatment may suppress MHC class II expression and modulate APC function in the G alpha M IgD-treated mice. In accordance with the assumption, T cells from the G alpha M IgD-treated mice produced high amount of IL-4 and IL-10 in in vitro culture with goat serum which contain goat Ig. These result suggest that G alpha M IgD treatment may modulate APC function in the G alpha M IgD-treated mice through Th2 type cytokine(s) produced by goat Ig-specific T cells, which results in changes of Th response against irrelevant antigen.

Suppression of T-helper type-1 immune response against Listeria monocytogenes by treatment of mice with goat antibodies to mouse IgD.

Injection of goat anti-mouse IgD antibodies (GAM IgD) to mice has been shown to induce polyclonal IgG1 and IgE production by B cells and interleukin-4 (IL-4) production by goat Ig-specific T cells. Surface IgD cross-linking also activates B cells to function as antigen-presenting cells (APC). Although the GAM IgD treatment is a well-established system for analysis of B-cell dependent antigen presentation, the influence of GAM IgD treatment on the immune response to irrelevant antigens is not known. To address this issue, we analysed effects of GAM IgD treatment on (1) the mitogen response of freshly isolated T cells, and (2) the listerial antigen-specific response after immunization with viable Listeria monocytogenes, which induces CD4+ interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) producing protective T cells in normal mice. Spleen CD4+ T cells from the GAM IgD-treated mice produced higher levels of IL-4 but lower levels of IFN-gamma and IL-2 than those from the control mice when they were stimulated with concanavalin A (Con A) in vitro. When spleen T cells were stimulated with listerial antigen 10 days after a low dose (1/20 LD50) of L. monocytogenes infection, CD4+ T cells from the GAM IgD-treated mice showed increased IL-4 production and decreased IFN-gamma and IL-2 production compared with those from the control L. monocytogenes-infected mice. Furthermore, the GAM IgD treatment resulted in a reduction of the survival rate after a high dose (1/2 LD50) of L. monocytogenes infection. These results suggest that treatment of mice with GAM IgD suppresses the T-helper type-1 (Th1)-type T-cell response and induces a Th2-type response against irrelevant antigens, even when they are injected after GAM IgD treatment.
