[Salmonella dublin enteric fever in two compromised hosts].

Salmonella (S) dublin is a rare cause of human enteric fever. We studied 2 compromised hosts, one of them being treated for lymphocytic leukemia and the other for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Both had recurrent enteric fever caused by S. dublin. Both strains were resistant to chloramphenicol and to ampicillin and the patients were treated by trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole to which the organism was sensitive. Investigations failed to discover an extraintestinal localisation and stool cultures remained negative after antibiotic treatment. One patient had a relapse of enteric fever at every relapse of his leukemia; the second patient after his second episode of enteric fever was treated prophylactically during 3 months. When he stopped antibiotic prophylaxis a fatal S. dublin septicemia occurred. We suggest that compromised hosts with S. dublin infection be treated prophylactically to prevent relapse.

[Aerobic glycolysis of tumor cells].

A high aerobic glycolysis (aerobic lactate production) is the most significant feature of the energy metabolism of rapidly growing tumor cells. Several mechanisms, which may be different in different cell lines, seem to be involved in this characteristic of energy metabolism of the tumor cell. Changes in the cell membrane leading to increased uptake and utilization of glucose, a high level of fetal types of isoenzymes, a decreased number of mitochondria and a reduced capacity to metabolize pyruvate are some factors which must be taken into consideration. It is not possible to favour one of them at the present time.

[Quality criteria in pancreatic sonography ].

The quality of pancreatic sonography is determined not only by the technical equipment used and by the experience of the interpreter but also by the variable anatomical and nutritional status of the patients examined. The sonograms obtained from 211 consecutively examined patients were analyzed with regard to the quality of pancreatic imaging. Direct visualization of the parenchyma of the pancreatic head and body was found in 47%. In an additional 36%, unequivocal localization of the pancreatic area was possible by delineating the peripancreatic vessels. 17% of the studies were non-diagnostic due to over-lying intestinal gas in obese patients and cases of extensive scarring. This percentage can be reduced by a modified examination technique. The use of alternative radiological methods is, therefore, obligatory in less than 10%.

[Sonographic location of the prostate gland by perineal-tomography (author's transl)].

The concept of radiation therapy of carcinoma of the prostate includes radiation of the primary tumour via a perineal field, besides ventral and dorsal irradiation fields. Therapy planning adapted to the individual anatomical conditions in the minor pelvis led to location of the prostate via perineal, sagittal ultrasonic tomography. Sonographic examination was conducted in 10 patients with carcinoma of the prostate, in 5 patients with benign enlargements of the organ and in 5 patients with urologically normal findings, taking the positioning of the patient during irradiation into consideration. In 18 of these 20 patients it was possible to determine the anatomical parameters relevant to therapeutic planning. Choice of the field dimensions, focal depth and angle of inclination of the central beam were greatly facilitated by this easy examination method which can be conducted as a routine measure.

Stimulation of bile and pancreatic secretion by duodenal perfusion with Na-taurocholate in the cat compared with jejunal and ileal perfusion.

In the anesthetized cat duodenal perfusion with Na-taurocholate (TC, 0.2 M, pH 6.1, 290 mosmol, 45 ml x h-1) stimulated pancreatic volume (0 to 326 +/- 236 mg x 10 min-1) and bicarbonate secretion (0 to 34.2 +/- 4.1 mumol x 10 min-1), whereas pancreatic enzyme output was sparse. Simultaneously with the pancreatic response, bile flow increased from 139 +/- 74 mg to 484 +/- 146 mg x 15 min-1 (p < 0.05). During perfusion of the upper jejunum both pancreatic and biliary responses were significantly lower than the responses to duodenal TC perfusion (p < 0.05). During TC perfusion of the terminal ileum there was no response from the pancreas, whereas the increase in bile flow accounted only for an increase in the bile-acid-dependent fraction. The concomitant stimulation of both the hydrokinetic function of the pancreas and the bile-acid-independent bile flow might be mediated by a release of secretin.

[Progesterone and estradiol levels in blood plasma of calves following superovulation treatment].

Studies into quantitative behaviours of oestradiol and progesterone in the blood plasma of six heads of prepuberal cattle, following superovulation treatment, using pregnant-mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) have shown the oestradiol concentrations to double, as early as two days after PMSG, and to go up to ten times their original values, after another four days had elapsed. Progesterone values increased, as early as along with induced oestrus, and, consequently, suggested scatter of the ovulation process. The maximum progesterone levels reached something in the vicinity of 100 ng/ml, following superovulation, and, consequently, were far in excess of anything recordable from spontaneously ovulating cyclic cattle. Hormone analyses were continued over six weeks from induced oestrus and superovulation, with evidence being produced to the effect that no permanent cyclic activity had been introduced. All calves rather returned to their prepuberal condition.

[Sex hormones in young pigs. I. Concentrations of plasma progesterone and estrogens of sows and urinary estrogens after synchronization of estrus and ovulation].

Treatment for synchronised heat and ovulation, using Suisynchron-Prämix, Bernburg, pregnant-mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG), and human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG), was followed with twelve gilts by daily measurement over 31 days of urine oestrogens, plasma progesterone as well as of plasma oestrogens during the oestric phases. Hormonal developments recorded during the oestrus and luteum phases were in agreement with the concepts and data so far known for the subject. An intermediate peak of oestrogen concentration was clearly recordable in the di-oestrus, that is between the tenth and 15th days of cycle. Its physiological importance will have to be further investigated.

[Epidemiological and clinical problems in multiple sclerosis].

After a short discussion of the incidence rate and the distribution of multiple sclerosis in the world, some epidemiological problems are dealt with. Multiple sclerosis is a relatively frequent disease occurring mainly in zones of temperate climate, in highly civilised and technically advanced countries, and it is mainly found among the white (European) race. Clinically important appraisal criteria are pointed out. Retaining or regaining of efficiency and working capacity are regarded as simple assessment criteria of long-term therapeutic efforts.

[Results of postoperative radiotherapy in breast cancer (author's transl)].

The results are presented of postoperative irradiation in the treatment of breast cancer at the Department of Radiotherapy and Radiobiology, University of Vienna. Our data compare well with the best results reported in the literature. Apart from the importance of high loco-regional freedom from disease for the quality of life of these patients, the related increase in survival prospects is stressed.

[The value of postoperative irradiation in the curative management of breast cancer (author's transl)].

A report is presented of the value of post-operative irradiation in patients with operable breast cancer. A combination of conservative surgery followed by irradiation provides optimal loco-regional results. Improved 10-year survival rates have already been reported with adequate irradiation of the peripheral lymphatics. The location and size of the primary tumour, as well as exact quantitative statements about histologically positive axillary lymph nodes are parameters of utmost importance.

Lipogenesis in Ehrlich ascites tumor cells under anaerobic culture conditions.

Anaerobic culture conditions (95% argon/5% CO2) caused a slightly greater increase in total lipids of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells than a gas phase of 20% O2, 75% N2, 5% CO2. Whereas the rate of [U-14C]acetate incorporation into total lipids and lipid-subclasses rose markedly in the absence of oxygen, a drastic decrease of [U-14C]pyruvate and [1-14C]octanoate incorporation as well as a 30% reduction of 3H incorporation into lipids from tritiated water were observed under these conditions. Since profound changes in the metabolic state of cells cause alterations in the specific activity of the acetyl-CoA pool but do not alter the specific activity of intracellular water, this precursor is considered to be an adequate monitor for lipogenesis under aerobic and anaerobic culture conditions. Therefore, it is concluded that Ehrlich ascites tumor cells are not able to reoxidize NADH/NADPH in the absence of oxygen by a stimulation of biosynthesis of fatty acids as is discussed to be the case in normal cells. The slight increase in total lipids of anaerobically cultured cells seems to be the result of an imbalance between normal uptake and impaired utilization of lipids from serum-supplemented culture medium.

Unexpectedly low incorporation of isotopic acetate into lipids of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells cultured in lipid-poor medium.

The present communication reports data on the lipid biosynthesis of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells grown in culture media supplemented with modified sera. Whereas the metabolisms of [14C]pyruvate and [14C]mevalonate are identical in all media tested, the incorporation of [14C] acetate is higher in medium with dialyzed serum than in medium with delipidized serum; it is suppressed in the absence of all lipids in culture medium. Cellular integrity is not impaired in modified media. The results indicate that acetyl-CoA synthetase of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells is not regulated by exogenous lipids as is known to be the case in nonmalignant cells.
