Long-term treatment with aromatic retinoid (Tigason) gives excellent results in lamellar ichthyosis (non-bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma), which is demonstrated in a young woman who was treated with Tigason for about 4 years. She was under treatment when a pregnancy was beginning. Although 2 days after birth the child showed pronounced icterus, except for elevations of SGOT and SGPT at present, the 5-month-old boy has no symptoms of internal or skin disease. It is known that aromatic retinoid has embryotoxic and teratogenic effects and should not to be given to women of childbearing potential without contraception. Pregnancy should not be allowed until 2 years after withdrawal of therapy because retinoid remains in the body for a long time.

Involuntary eye movements at the onset of sleep are mentioned in Virgil's Aeneid (19 BC). "Nystagmus" in relation to states of lowered consciousness was painstakingly catalogued by Sauvages (1768). Sporadic studies of eye behavior during sleep were recorded during the 19th century and were associated with disorders of brainstem physiology, culminating in von Economo's observations during the encephalitis lethargica epidemic of the 1920s.
The title refers to the two different but synonymous longitudinal midbrain bundles, one of which had two names. Described as early as 1846 by Benedict Stilling, our medial longitudinal fasciculus was first called "acusticus," then "posterior," by Theodor Meynert in 1872. Many authorities in neurology continued to call it "posterior" well into the 20th century. When, in 1891, Heinrich Schütz described the other longitudinal bundle, the one which was to keep his name alive, he chose the word dorsal--"for brevity's sake." Here Ramón y Cajal's alternative suggestion of "peri-ependymal" (1904) failed to achieve popularity, not to speak of Theodor Ziehen's nubecula dorsalis (1913). It probably was Wilhelm His, Sr, who in 1895 first prescribed the change from "posterior" to "medial" for the benefit of the Basle Nomenclature and an end to the confusion.
Placebo - the promise to please the Lord of medieval prayer became the "pious fraud" (Thomas Jefferson) of late 18th century medical practice. Quoted here is Rétif de la Bretonne (1734-1806), one of the most prolific novelists and popular encyclopedists ever, also highly regarded by some illustrious critics, as he is giving his cynical views about the "prejudices", (rather then "placebos") in religion, politics, and the art of healing.

At three University Departments of Dermatology (Berlin, Leipzig, Erfurt) of the GRD, 63 psoriatics (46 men, 17 women) were treated with aromatic retinoid Ro 10-9359 (Tigason) up to a maximum of 84 weeks. In 34 of these cases, photochemotherapy was additionally applied. This combination resulted in a more rapid healing than Tigason alone. The average initial dose amounted to 1 mg per kg body weight. Only in cases of psoriatic erythroderma, the treatment started with a daily rate of 25 mg Tigason. The maintenance dose came to 50 to 25 mg daily. On account of deterioration of the cutaneous condition and/or heavy itching, the treatment had to be discontinued in 4 cases. Side effects as cheilitis, rhagades, loss of hair, and onycholysis disappeared after reduction of the dose. Our study confirmed the good therapeutical effect of Tigason with the various forms of psoriasis.

To determine the possible role of cytochrome P-450 in the adaptation response of an organism to chronic carbon monoxide exposure, rats received 4, 15 or 30 subcutaneous CO injections (7.2 mmol/kg body mass; maximal COHb concentration about 56%). The concentration of cytochrome P-450 is significantly reduced after 4 injections. This effect is no longer evident following 15 or 30 CO injections, which produced distinct increases of the total hemoglobin concentration. Ethylmorphine N-demethylation is distinctly inhibited after 4, 15 and 30 CO injections, whereas the initial inhibition of ethoxycoumarin O-deethylation disappears after 30 CO administrations. Ethoxyresorufin O-deethylation is only slightly influenced by CO.
