Interactions between inosine and adenosine: experimental researches.

Experimental investigations have shown that inosine enhances purinergic reactivity. This was examined with adenosine at the level of the cardiovascular, intestinal and uterine musculature. The mechanism of this activity may probably be inhibition of uptake without significantly altering serum adenosinase.

[Protective effect of lithium carbonate in neutropenia induced by antiblastic agents and evaluation of its long-term efficacy].

The association of lithium carbonate and antiblastic drugs has been studied in 22 patients suffering from tumours to see whether it was able to prevent or attenuate the neutropenising effect and establish whether its protection action on leucocytaemia was not just transitory but was maintained for prolonged treatment also. Patients were submitted to four oncolytic treatment cycles during which administration with LiCO3 was associated with the first and third cycles (LNLN sequence) in 14 patients and with the second and fourth (NLNL sequence) in the other 8. Statistical analysis of the results obtained confirmed that lithium carbonate performs a protective action with respect to antiblastic-induced neutropenia and that the action is long term. The drop in monocytes also seems to diminish after administration of lithium carbonate.

Hassall's corpuscle: a regressive formation.

Alpha naphthylesterase and leucineaminopeptidase activities in Hassall's corpuscles in the Gallus dom, and Cavia cobaya were found to be similar to those in man and in other animals. Histochemical findings of the thymus during the course of the growing phase have shown that these two enzymes are closely connected with the initial formation of a Hassall's corpuscle. Some medullary parenchymal epitheliocytes react strongly at this time. At first present in small clusters, they gradually become more numerous and finally escape from the network. Next they tend to cluster together, enclosing other cells with them. This change is connected with a new structure acquired by the cells. Enzymatic activity, antigenic properties and immunological reactions are only present in the early growth stages of a Hassall's corpuscle, when the cells are often hypertrophic. The component parts of the lamellated corpuscle are subject to involutive phenomena; they cease to function and to supply structural material until they finally disappear. The thymus is able to provide formative material without having recourse to Hassall's corpuscle. However, we are inclined to consider the progressive phase of Hassall's corpuscle to be important, as then elements in growth are clearly differentiated.

[A cell line particularly susceptible to bovine enteric Coronavirus replication: HRT 18 cells].

Bovine enteric Corona virus (BEC) multiplies spontaneously with very high efficiency in HRT 18 cells; this line established from human rectum adenocarcinoma presents some properties of the differentiated brush border cell of the intestinal villi. Titers obtained are very high (5 x 10(7) TCID 50/ml virus strain F15). The virus produced had the characteristic of BEC: shape, spikes, density 1.19, hemadsorption and hemagglutination of rat erythrocytes. Human and dog enteritic corona viruses replicate also in HRT 18 cells.

Derivatives of 5,7,7-trimethyl-6-oxa-3-azabicyclo[3.2.2]nonane with antiarrhythmic, local anesthetic and hypotensive activities. I.

The synthesis of three series of 3-acyl-, 3-alkyl- and 3-dialkylaminoacetyl-5,7,7-trimethyl-6-oxa-3-azabicyclo[3.2.2]nonanes, (III), (IV) and (V), respectively, is described. A number of these compounds showed surface anesthesia in rabbits and infiltration anesthesia in mice, and antiarrhythmic activity in guinea pigs and mice, all effects being superior or similar to those of lidocaine. The circulatory, cardiac and respiratory effects in dogs and hens are also described.

Intracarotidal injection of beta-adrenergic blocking agents: variations in the carotid sinus baro- and chemoreceptor activity.

The intracarotidal injection of some bet-adrenergic blocking agents (dl-acebutolol, dl-, l-, d-alprenolol, dl-bunitrolol, dl-buthoxamine, dl-, l-, d-INPEA, dl-Ko 592, dl-metoprolol, dl-oxprenolol, dl-propranolol, dl-tolamolol) in anesthetized and bivagotomized dogs reduced the arterial blood pressure and the baro- and chemoreceptor activity. These effects seem to be mediated by an interaction with central nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory structures dependent on the carotid arteries and by a direct interference of these drugs with the carotid sinus baro- and chemoreceptor structures. Moreover, these effects were not a result of the beta-adrenolytic properties of the drugs.
