Patients with active tuberculosis who are noncompliant with their prescribed medical treatment program pose a serious hazard to others as well as to themselves. If directly observed therapy cannot be implemented, involuntary confinement of such patients is ethically justified in both secular and Jewish law. This discussion of the Jewish view on this issue is drawn from classical, biblical, talmudic, and rabbinic sources.

We report the case of a 66-year-old woman with mixed connective tissue disease (MCD) who had recurrent renal infarcts and renal insufficiency with only mildly increased serum anticardiolipin antibodies. After low-dose aspirin therapy, the renal lesions resolved, and renal function returned to normal within 3 weeks.

Ethical relationships between physicians and the drug industry require guidelines to maintain the integrity of the medical profession. The acceptance of gifts and subsidies for the cost of continuing-medical-education conferences is considered ethically acceptable provided the gifts are of minimal value and that the control of content and the selection of presenters and moderators for industry-supported CME programs rest solely with the CME-sponsoring institution. Current ethical guidelines for pharmaceutical industry support of CME programs are reviewed in this essay.
