[Single oral dose of phosphomycin trometamol versus pipemidic acid and norfloxacin in treating uncomplicated low-level urinary tract infections].

OBJECTIVE: To make an assessment of the effectiveness and safety of a single oral dose compared with the conventional way of treating low-level Urinary Infections presenting no complications. DESIGN: This was an investigative and prospective study, using a control, a simple blind and randomised sample. SITE. Health Centres in Oviedo and Zaragoza. PATIENTS OR OTHERS PARTICIPANTS: We looked at 150 patients and included 106 females between the ages of 16 and 75 in the study. Their clinical symptoms were compatible with low-level urinary infections presenting no complications. INTERVENTIONS: 49 patients were given Trometamol Phosphomicine (TP) in a single oral dose; 36 took Pipemidic Acid (PA) and 21 Norfloxacine (NFX), both of these in a dose of 400 mg twice a day for 5 to 7 days. MAIN MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Clinical and bacteriological assessments of the results were made 3, 7, and 28 days after treatment. A total of 75 gems were isolated: E. coli was the most common (68%). In all three groups, the main symptoms rapidly disappeared after the start of the treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Having considered the bacteriological and clinical findings, as well as tolerance levels, we are able to conclude that a single oral dose of Trometamol Phosphomicine is a good alternative to conventional therapy for the treatment of low-level Urinary Infections Which present no complications.

[Area mesencephalica on the raphe and its importance. (Stereometric reconstruction in cat) (author's trnsl)].

The cat's mesencephalic raphe, caudally extended to the locus ceruleus and rostrally to the habenulo-interpedunculary area, was reconstructed with foamy-plastic plates in a stereotaxis ensemble of the brainstem. This reconstruction serves as an important reference to the topography and for interpreting the functional background of the stereotaxic lesions accumulated in the last 5 years. The alterations of the lung's alveolar interstitium after the nervous lesions, were classified in different groups of common evolution.

A dynamic study of genotype-environment interaction with egg laying of Tribolium castaneum.

Within-line family selection was carried out at an optimum (33 degrees C) and two stress temperatures (28 degrees C and 38 degrees C) for increasing egg number laid by virgin females of Tribolium castaneum from the 7th to the 11th day after adult emergence. A control was maintained throughout the experiment. Two replicated lines were selected at each temperature and all selected lines were tested in each of the three environments. Direct and correlated responses to selection in different environments have been analysed in order to study implications of genotype-environment interaction on the selection outcome. Although selection at the optimum environment has been the most effective it did not confer the specialisation needed for performance in stress environments. However, selecting in adverse environments led to a broader range of performance over environments, which in one case (38 degrees C) included the optimum one. The degree of adaptation to adverse environments was mainly determined by the magnitude of the genetic correlation between performances in the adverse and the optimum environments. The evolution of such correlations through selection has also been investigated.

A genetic study of the buff columbian color pattern in Prat chickens.

The genetic basis for plumage color in the Prat fowl, a spanish breed with columbian restricted pattern, was studied, and results of crosses between the Prat and a recessive wheaten tester line (ey/ey co+/co+) or the Castellana breed (E/E), showed that it carries a wheaten allele at the E locus. Crosses between the Prat and the Light Brown Leghorn (e+/e+ co+/co+) or the Brown (eb/eb co+/co+) tester lines showed that the wheaten allele is the dominant one (ewh). These crosses suggested that the brown allele (eb) is also present at low frequency. The dominant columbian restriction gene (Co) seems to be involved in the Prat breed, interacting with the dominant wheaten allele to produce the characteristic plumage of the breed. Results of crosses between the Prat and the Vasca, another Spanish breed with gold columbian restricted pattern and ewh/ewh Co/Co genotype showed that they both differ by one major gene affecting phaeomelanin intensity. The Prat breed is well characterized by the orange buff down and by the ginger red adult plumage.
