The frequencies in Japanese subjects are reported of hair roots type PGM1, PGM3, and Es-D, and the determination of these types from old hair roots. The gene frequencies were: PGM11, 0.762; PGM21, 0.230; PGM 71, 0.008; PGM13, 0.621; PGM23, 0.379; Es-D1, 0.625; and Es-D2, 0.375. The old hair roots were analysed after storage at 25 degrees C, 4 degrees C and -80 degrees C; the enzyme activities were detected and typed at 25 degrees C within PGM1 10 days, PGM3 4 days, and Es-D 4 days.
Osame et al. first described human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) associated myelopathy (HAM) as a new clinical entity in 1986. A 23 year old female diagnosed as having HAM whose family had a high frequency of double virus infection with HTLV-1 and hepatitis B virus (HBV) gave reason to suspect mother-to-child transmission of both viruses. No clear coincidence in the mode of transmission of HTLV-1 and HBV was found. It is presumed that the mechanism of infection with HTLV-1 and HBV differ slightly.
A 33 year old woman with mental deficiency, retinitis pigmentosa, obesity, and parental consanguinity (heredity) was diagnosed as having Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome. She also had diabetes mellitus, slight hepatic dysfunction, and hepatomegaly. Liver biopsy showed perilobular fibrosis and bile duct proliferation with cystic dilatation; these findings are consistent with those of congenital hepatic fibrosis.
A 74-year-old man complained of a cough and left chest pain. Chest X-ray showed marked pleural effusion and a large mass in the left lower lobe, and air bronchograms within the mass were observed by tomography and computed tomography (CT). About 3 months later, the patient died of left atelectasis and pneumonia. Autopsy revealed a localized tumor in the lower lobe of the left lung. Histologically, proliferation of lymphoma cells was noted. Immunoglobulin staining showed B cell-type monoclonality. No metastasis was evident except for a very small nodular area in the left renal cortex.
