A child presented in the first year of life with a slowly evolving cerebellar syndrome which resulted in death at the age of 4 1/2 years. A peculiar tumour involving the cerebellum and brain stem and destroying the cerebellar anatomy is described. This was considered to be a form of gangliomatous hamartoma.

The possible relationship between erythrocyte antigens and the presence of malaria infection by P. vivax and P. falciparum was sought in four different ethnic groups of two departments of Colombia. Malaria infection by P. falciparum was found in 91.4% of malaria infected blacks. No significant differences were found between the presence of malaria infection and ABO antigens. In the other blood groups, it was observed that groups MNSs conferred black people a greater Rr for malaria by both species of Plasmodium and that Duffy-negative blacks and indians appeared to be resistant to P. vivax infection. A predominance of P. vivax infection was observed in Katio Indians while P. falciparum was predominant in Kuna Indians; the reason for this finding still needs to be explored.

These results were obtained on a double blinded study which compared the Nifedipine effects, a dihydropyrine calcium blocker of extensive cardiovascular function, the Ketotifen and a placebo orally administered, during 4 months, every 12 hours, on children with allergic asthma, older than 5 years old, who had a minimum of 2 years of evolution in their sickness. These people consulted the Allergic Service of the University Hospital of San Vicente de Paul in Medellín, Colombia, between July of 1984 and December 1986. Nifedipine diminished its intensity, frequency and the time the crisis lasted; it was seen at the end of the treatment. It also diminished bronchodilator consumption in more than 80% of the cases it 90% of the patients reported beneficial effects with Nifedipine and the improvement evaluated by the doctor showed 75%. These results were statistically similar to those obtained with Ketotifen but significantly superior to those obtained with the placebo. There wasn't any variation on the pulmonary function test, neither on the cardiovascular parameters evaluated. Side effects were mild and very few. We can assure that Nifedipine can be an alternative drug for the treatment of low or moderate child Extrinsic Asthma, given its similar behavior to Ketotifen, a drug of known effectiveness in this topic. The Calcium Blockers can become an elective treatment in the future for the asthmatic patient, if some molecules with higher affinity for respiratory tracts and better blocking effect, can be synthetized.
Fetal ultrasonography supplied the diagnosis of hydrocephalus after 35 weeks of pregnancy. After birth, the diagnosis was confirmed by clinical examination and CT Scan. Psychomotor development was normal with stabilization of the hydrocephalus without any treatment. In view of this case, the authors discussed the indications for antenatal surgical treatment of hydrocephalus cases diagnosed in utero.
Echoencephalography through the fontanelle provides a complete scan of the head allowing the study of the ventricular system and cerebral parenchyma. The closure of the anterior fontanelle is the only limiting factor for this remarkably innocuous technique which is easy to perform (even in neonates under artificial ventilation in incubators), easy to repeat and relatively cheap. The authors report the results of 700 ultrasonic examinations carried out in 467 children. The echostructure of the brain, is studied in detail in 70 normal subjects (30 prematures, 31 at term neonates and infants under 1 year of age). In a population of 397 sick children the abnormal pictures were analysed according to clinical circumstances: perinatal distress (n = 107), prematurity (n = 81), hydrocephalus (n = 31), malformations (n = 9)... Our results confirm the usefulness of this technique for the early anatomic evaluation of any high-risk brain and for the follow-up of the lesions. The respective values of echography through the fontanelle, transcranial echography and computed tomography are discussed.
