With the purpose of studying the influence of personality on suicidal behavior, 63 female suicide attempters were assessed by means of standardized interviews, Eysenck's personality questionnaire (EPQ-R) and other psychometric scales. Personality disorders (DMS III-R) were found in almost 70 per 100 and associated with previous attempts, higher hopelessness, suicide ideation, and to a more severe attempt. The most relevant dimensions were psychoticism and extraversion. The first one correlated to repetition, hopelessness, and suicide ideation; the second exerted a moderating effect, showing association with feelings of conformity towards survival. Neuroticism showed a rather unspecific effect on studied factors. Results confirm a relationship between personality disorders and suicidal behavior, and suggest possible mediating variables.
The Drive and Mood Scale, used in chronopsychometric studies for evaluating dimensions of Affective State, is presented. This instrument is based upon the ESTA Scale developed by Supprian and complemented on the basis of the experience gathered during research projects conducted with the Spanish version.
Recent advances in brain electrical activity recording are examined against the background of their relevance to Psychiatry. It is contended that this relevance is dependent upon an appropriate integration with other empirical referents, which should lead to an assessment of their scope and limitations.
Some of the current issues in the field of biomedical ethics are reviewed. Taking a brief description of the structure of the Chilean medical system as a frame of reference, the article addresses questions of professional ethics that affect relationships among physicians, between physicians and the public, and between physicians and the State. Observations are offered on some of the ethical aspects of medical care, in particular the teaching of bioethics, the establishment of committees on ethics in health care and research institutions, and the future outlook for bioethics in the country. In Chile, as in other Latin American countries, the teaching of this new discipline is not widespread, but there is growing interest in its inclusion in the curricula.

This paper makes a proposal on the psychophysiological study of personality, characterized by the articulation of physiological, behavioral and subjective discourses, in the perspective of the descriptive, the explanatory and the predictive aims of personality theory. A definition of a trait is proposed, based not only on persistency but on the concordant configuration of features in the three methodical discourses of the psychophysiological enterprise. Studies on the augmenting-reducing dimension are commented in view to their relevance for an integrative theory of behavior.
