Two hundred and thirty-six women were studied for the development of endometritis following cesarean section. Cultures were taken of the amniotic fluid and endocervix through the internal os during the operative procedure. Of the 236 patients, clinical evidence of endometritis developed in 105. Positive cultures of the amniotic fluid or the endocervix, or both, were not helpful in predicting significant clinical infection. The patients with endometritis were treated with a combination of either clindamycin and gentamicin or cefazolin and gentamicin. All of the 54 patients, receiving clindamycin and gentamicin improved, but eight of the 51 patients in the cefazolin group failed to respond but, subsequently, improved after the administration of clindamycin. No serious toxicity was observed in either group.
A sample of 220 normal pre-school and primary school children was tested by the Continuous Performance Test (CPT), a test of sustained attention (vigilance), the Draw-a-Line Slowly test (DALS), a test of motor inhibition and two sub-tests of the latter test. Significant social class associations were found for the CPT and DALS tests, but were not present for DALO and DALF (measures of speed in drawing a line). Sex differences were not found for the CPT test or for DALS, but the boys completed the DALO and DALF tests faster than the girls suggesting superior motor activity and co-ordination.
It has been established that nucleosomes are made of histones and DNA fragments. The purpose of this work to establish whether some non-histone proteins are also present in these chromatin subunits. We have found that nucleosome preparations contain phosphorylated non-histone proteins and protein kinases by sucrose gradient analysis. In order to establish whether these proteins are actually bound to nucleosomes or if they represent unbound or aggregated proteins, the following experiments were performed. (a) Free non-histone proteins and proteins released from chromatin by DNase overdigestion were analyzed by sucrose gradient centrifugation. No phosphoproteins but some phosvitin kinase activity was found in the part of the gradient which contained the nucleosomes. It could be assumed that part of the phosphoproteins are bound to nucleosomes. (b) A digestion of nucleosomes with DNase I suppressed the phosvitin kinase activity in the 11-S region of the gradient. (c) High ionic strength, which extracted non-histone proteins, suppressed the phosvitin kinase activity in the nucleosome region. Part of phosvitin kinase and of nuclear phosphoproteins are therefore bound to nucleosomes and are released by nuclease digestion and by high ionic strength.
A pilot study was conducted on 22 children (19 boys and three girls) aged between four and eight years, who were selected as hyperactive on the basis of developmental history and clinical judgement. Conners' parent-teacher ratings, objective tests of attention, standard perceptualmotor tests and subtests from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), were used as response variables. The children were tested before and after four weeks on the elimination diet, after a tartrazine and placebo challenge, and, finally, after a four-week washout period on the diet. Results showed a statistically significant improvement in the mothers' ratings of the children's behaviour after the first four weeks of the diet. The improvement was maintained in a combined analysis of the initial four-week diet period and four-week washout period. This result was not substantiated by the statistical analysis of the results from objective tests. The rating scales and objective tests for the full sample did not show a statistically significant deterioration in the children's behaviour when they were challenged under double-blind test conditions with the Yellow Dye No. 5, tartrazine, and the tests were conducted the day after a two-week challenge period. A comparison of mother ratings of behaviour during challenge and placebo double-blind trial and in the 24 hours preceding tests, in a subgroup of the children who, while on the diet, showed a 25% reduction of symptoms on the Conner's rating scale, indicated a significant challenge effect (P less than 0.025), with mothers reporting more symptoms during the challenge period. Dietary infringements with suspected trigger substances occurred throughout the trial.
Study I. In 13 iron deficient patients the absorption from 100 mg ferrous sulphate (Ferro-Retard) after 3 and 5 hours was comparable to the absorption from 176 mg ferrous gluconate in rapidly disintegrating tablets (Ferronicum). Study II. (a) The serum iron elevation in 14 blood donors with normal Hb after administration of ferrous sulphate (100 mg Fe2+) in Ferro-Retard or Duroferon Duretter seemed to be equal when tested on the 4th day after donation of 450 ml blood. (b) The iron absorption, measured by the elevation of serum iron 5 and 8 hours after administration of sustained release tablets, proved to be better on the 11th and especially on the 16th day than on the 4th day after donation. Study III (side-effects). In a study on 113 subjects the total number of complaints was unusually high both before and after administration of placebo, rapidly disintegrating and sustained release ferrous sulphate tablets. The selection of participants and other methodological factors have probably been of importance. Hence, comparisons between different studies of side-effects should always be carried out with caution.

The inhibitory action of aurine-tricarboxylic acid (ATA) on protein synthesis, known in vitro, has been checked in vivo in Allium sativum L. root meristems. Parallel to this inhibition, ATA acts on cell proliferation, on the one hand by preventing the entering of cells into prophase and, on the other hand, by disturbing the process of mitosis.
