Growth hormone reserve capacity in Turner's syndrome.

In 11 untreated and 6 oestrogen-treated Turner's syndrome patients, the changes in the serum growth hormone level were studied following the induction of hypoglycaemia with insulin. The growth hormone was measured with a radioimmune assay technique. The growth hormone peak value measured in healthy females was 54.32 +/- 17.17, in untreated Turner's syndrome was 14.90 +/- 3.71, and in oestrogen-treated Turner patients was 33.38 +/- 9.22 microU/ml (average +/- standard error). On the basis of the results, a role is attributed to the decreased growth hormone reserve in the low growth of Tuner's syndrome patients.

The ADH-reserve capacity in Brattleboro rats.

The water metabolism was studied in homo- and heterozygous Brattleboro rats suffering from hereditary hypothalamic diabetes insipidus. In homozygous Brattleboro rats the spontaneous water intake and urinary output and the diuretic reactions signficantly increased after water and salt loading. No antidiuretic activity was found in the urine, posterior pituitary or hypothalamus of these animals, and this state was not affected by hyperosmosis. For the heterozygous rats the spontaneous water intake and urinary output and the diuretic reaction exceed the respective control values, the posterior pituitary, the hypothalamus and the urine are of reduced antidiuretic activity and this activity is less mobilizable by hyperosmosis. It is concluded that the ADH-reserve deficiency is total in the homozygous Brattleboro rats, and partial in the heterozygotes. As a result of hyperosmosis, the vasopressin release is of a reduced extent, yet detectable in the heterozygotes.

Experience of prolonged treatment of hand-Schüller-Christian disease with prednisolone.

An account is presented of the experience acquired in the prolonged prednisolone treatment, at 2-day intervals, of 6 patients with Hand-Schüller-Christian disease. A substantial improvement was observed in the basic process, with scarcely any side-effects. On the basis of the literature data and the present findings, glucocorticoid administration every second day is recommended for the treatment of these patients.

Vasopressin(1-8) (des-glycinamide9-[Arg8]vasopressin) is an endogenous peptide present in rat plasma.

Using a radioimmunoassay for [Arg8]vasopressin(1-8) (des-glycinamide9-[Arg8]vasopressin; DGAVP) endogenous immunoreactive DGAVP (IR-DGAVP) was detected in extracts of plasma prepared from trunk blood of male Wistar rats. The IR-DGAVP was further characterized by reversed-phase high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). One of the two immunoreactive peaks obtained by HPLC coeluted with synthetic DGAVP and did not cross-react in a radioimmunoassay specific for [Arg8]vasopressin(1-9) (AVP). The other showed the chromatographical and radioimmunological characteristics of AVP. Analysis by HPLC of plasma prepared from fresh blood spiked with 3H-AVP indicated that under the experimental conditions employed no DGAVP was formed during extraction. The results indicate that DGAVP is present in rat plasma, possibly as an endogenous metabolite of AVP.
