[Correlations between HSV-2-infection and precancerous condition of uterine cervix (author's transl)].

Two groups of patients were examined and compared. One of them had been made up of 113 women from whom positive cytological responses had been recorded to colposcopy, and the other included 59 women with negative findings. The titres to HSV-2-infection were higher with significance in the first group. The authors conclusion is that HSV-2 infection might be one of the risk factors contributory to carcinogenesis in the uterine cervix.

Dissociation of tick-borne encephalitis virus by Triton X-100 and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide.

The uses of the nonionic detergent Triton X-100 (TX-100) and the cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) for the production of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus subunits were compared. TX-100 splitted the virus into haemagglutinating envelope components which contain the virion proteins V3 and V1 and into a lipid-free nucleoprotein composed of RNA and V2. The lipid content of the released envelope fragments decreased with increasing detergent concentration. By the use of CTAB, the viral glycoprotein V3 could be prepared in electrophoretically pure and active, i.e. haemagglutinating form.

Purification and characterization of aldehyde dehydrogenase from bovine liver.

Aldehyde dehydrogenase from bovine liver has been purified to homogeneity. Amino acid composition showed a high content of cysteine of 32 mol/mol enzyme. The enzyme is composed of four identical subunits as judged by sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis and end-group analysis. The molecular weight was determined to be 220 000 +/- 10 000 by sedimentation equilibrium analysis in an analytical ultracentrifuge. The Michaelis constants for NAD+, glyceraldehyde and acetaldehyde were found to be 47 micron, 170 micron and 130 micron, respectively.

[Solid-phase radioimmunoassay for class specific immunoglobulins against tick-borne encephalitis virus (author's transl)].

By adsorbing purified Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus antigen onto beads of polystyrene, a solid-phase radioimmunoassay (RIA) for specific antibodies of the IgM- and IgG-class in untreated and nonfractionated human sera could be developed. The antibodies were measured by antihuman-gamma and antihuman-mu globulin labelled with 125 I. The RIA was about 20 times as sensitive as the hemagglutination-inhibition test. About 10% more cases of TBE could be diagnosed with the RIA than with the 2-mercaptoethanol test.
