[Volumetric verification of edema protection with Serrapeptase after third molar osteotomy].

Preventive edema protection using Serrapeptase after standardized one-stage osteotomy procedures of 4 third molars was verified by means of an opto-electronic measuring instrument. This measuring technique proved to be a sensitive tool for demonstrating the efficacy of Serrapeptase in reducing postoperative edema. Although statistically significant, the reduction of soft tissue swelling was only approximately 15% when compared with a patient group without Serrapeptase medication.

[Fibrin adhesives in the treatment of oral hemangioma].

Selective embolization using the fast-setting phase of a fibrin adhesive is an improvement in the range of therapeutic options for oral hemangioma. Direct injection of TISSUCOL permits a safe, selective and tissue-sparing operative procedure involving little bleeding and resulting in the complete extirpation of a hemangioma with all the residues.

[Ascher's syndrome].

Ascher's syndrome is composed of the triad blepharochalasis, double lip and goitre. In many of the cases reported in the literature this typical constellation of symptoms is not complete; particularly the struma is not mandatorily involved. A 58-year-old patient with this rare disease who exhibited blepharochalasis and double upper and lower lip is presented. Additionally, subclinical hypothyroidism and alopecia areata totalis were found. In differential diagnosis other causes of double lips or enlargement of the lips must be considered.

[Antithrombin III control in patients with long-term anticoagulant therapy].

Antithrombin III and protein C are the major inhibitors of the plasma clotting system. Since adequate thromboembolism protection requires a cofactor AT III for heparin to provide full antithrombotic coverage, the preoperative AT III and protein C levels in the plasma of 105 patients treated with marcumar are measured. The understanding of the physiological role of these inhibitors of the plasma clotting system and of the causes for their decrease should directly lead to the indications for laboratory analysis.

[Stereotactic localization and removal of foreign bodies situated deep to the facial tissues].

This stereotactic method permits the localization of any radiographically visible foreign body in the maxillofacial hard and soft tissues. Stereotactic needles can be inserted either via an intraoral or an extraoral approach. Use of these needles as guides during tissue preparation allows simple exposure and subsequent removal of foreign bodies. A close cooperation between neurosurgeons and maxillofacial surgeons during this procedure is recommended. The technique is explained with the aid of 2 case reports.

[Unilateral hypertrophy of the coronoid process associated with facial asymmetry. Case report].

A rare case of unilateral coronoid process hypertrophy associated with limitation of mouth opening, deviation of the mandible to the affected side and facial asymmetry is reported. The importance of a thorough preoperative clinical and radiological examination is stressed. The resection of the coronoid process via an intraoral approach and the subsequent physiotherapy led to a good functional and aesthetic result.
