Sex ratio and litter size in relation to parity and mode of conception in three inbred strains of mice.

Breeding records from three inbred strains of mice (BALB/c ABom, C57BL/10ScSn, C3H/He/Kon) were examined with respect to the effects of parity and mode of conception upon litter size and sex ratio at birth. Litters from 3 modes of conception were considered: litters of primipares, litters of multipares conceived during postpartum oestrus and litters conceived after lactational anoestrus. Litters of multipares were assigned to one of these latter groups according to the inter-litter intervals. Parity had no significant effect upon the sex ratio but had a significant one upon the litter size, which did not vary between the strains when first litters were excluded from analysis. The expected variations in response to the mode of conception were found in BALB/c ABom mice but both the effects on the litter size as well as on the sex ratio varied significantly between the strains. Litter size reduction per se could be ruled out to be the cause of the sex ratio variations found. Rather, it is suggested that sex-specificity of embryonic loss depends upon the mode of conception.

Differential regulation of synthesis of multiple forms of specific endoglucanases by Trichoderma reesei QM9414.

A method consisting of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and subsequent detection of endoglucanases by blotting with a polyclonal antibody against endoglucanase I was used to investigate the effect of induction and carbon catabolite derepression on the synthesis of multiple forms of endoglucanase I by Trichoderma reesei. Five forms appeared upon growth on cellulose, whereas four and only two appeared upon growth on lactose (carbon catabolite derepression) and induction by sophorose in a resting cell system, respectively. All endoglucanases detected resembled endoglucanase I in their specificity, since they exhibited no activity toward xylan or paranitrophenyl-beta-D-lactobioside. A small (25-kilodalton) endoglucanase only appeared during growth on cellulose. None of the multiple forms arose by postsecretional modification. The results indicate that sophorose may not be the only compound mediating cellulose induction of the specific endoglucanases in T. reesei.

Suppressor cell activity in patients with tonsillar carcinoma.

The follow-up of suppressor cell activity in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil seems to give anew insight into the clinical situation of a patient. In 54 patients with tonsillar carcinoma followed over 3 years, regulator cells, i.e., suppressor cells, have been investigated. The patients with bad clinical conditions show continuous increase with suppressor activity already at the time of operation, especially in cultures with activated suppressor cells. The new therapeutical treatment of cancer patients should be directed in such a way that the unfavourable suppressor cell be eliminated while the cytotoxic effector cell be stimulated.

[Detection of antitumor-antibodies in patients with tonsillar carcinoma (author's transl)].

48 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil were tested for autologous and allogeneic antitumor-antibodies directed against squamous cell carcinoma cells. The use of autologous serum avoids the need of absorption. Antibodies detected at the time of tumor extirpation could also be used to label their specific antigen of cells from swabs of the oral cavity. Such a surface fluoreszens appeared in 5 patients between 3 and 6 months before recurrency and could be followed during the whole course of disease. Besides very low amounts of antibodies of the IgA- and IgM-class the main portion was IgG. While these antibodies reacted in a similar degree with allogeneic tonsillar carcinomas cross reaction with other allogeneic tumor cells (bladder--kidney carcinoma) could not be detected.

[Immunological studies in patients with carcinomas of the floor of the mouth and of the tonsils (author's transl)].

New insights into the cellular control mechanisms of immune reactivity may become important to physicians who manage patients with cancer. In 29 patients with tonsillar carcinoma, not only humoral, but also cellular mechanisms with major emphasis on regulator cells, i.e. suppressor cells, have been investigated. It seems from these cells, as if an unspecific suppressive activity measured in these patients could give a better opportunity to trace the immunological immune reaction against this tumor and give thus a chance for "specific immunotherapeutic regimens" which should on the one hand stress the activation of the host's tumor cytotoxicity and on the other hand eliminate the function of suppressor cells.

[Continuing education for social workers in the field of gerontology (author's transl)].

This article reports on a first attempt to integrate advanced training programs for social workers in the field of psycho-social gerontology into university curricula. The report concentrates on experience and problems to transmit and translate gerontological research results for the use of practitioners. Especially effective proved the integration of social workers as "experts-in-practice" into open-curricular-learning and their participation in application oriented research.

[Acneiform eruptions in female workers at a cable factory].

Acne and acneform changes are the most frequent occupational diseases in certain industries. As a rule, an oil acne occurs rather seldom in the cordage industry. However, in the factory at Rijeka, 85% of the occupational dermatoses were oil acnes. Mineral oil used in the treatment of hemp was the main etiologic factor. In the ill female workers of that cordage factory, the microclimate, the needle shaped hemp dust, greasy skin, bad working conditions and had hygiene played an important part.

[Therapy evaluation in rheumatology with an electronic data processing system].

A system for the evaluation of therapeutical effects in rheumatic diseases is presented. This system permits a calculation of two indices: i.e. rheuma-number and "Masszahl" (= only measured values such as range of motion in degrees) which lend themselves to statistical treatment. The result of standardized physical joint examination of patients is recorded on two mark-pages, specially developed for documentation of joint status. The data recorded on the two-mark-pages are then entered into the computer by means of a mark-page-reader. On the basis of these data, the computer, upon the basis of a program specially developed for this purpose, automatically calculates the corresponding amount of negative-points, which parallels the severity of the joint changes, i.e. the rheuma-number ("Rheumazahl"). Separately listed at the end of the status-outprint is the "Masszahl", which is part of the rheuma-number and comprises the measured values (for example, the range of motion measured in degrees). The practicability of this system is demonstrated on the basis of the results of a double-blind-comparison of two antirheumatic-corticosteroid-combinations and an open study with immuno-suppressives in patinets with rheumatoid arthritis.
