Epidemiological study of long-term effects of pesticides on human health.

Two rural areas in Italy with different rates of pesticide usage were subjected to a cross-sectional investigation, based on the identification of organochlorine compounds in the environment and in human fatty tissues and on the determination of their concentration and a prospective investigation, based on the collection of data of past and present pathology and symptomatology from two stratified random groups of inhabitants of both areas. The cross-sectional investigation showed only small differences in environmental pollution and no differences in the storage of organochlorine compounds in fatty tissues in the two areas. The prospective investigation showed a higher prevalence of pathology and symptomatology in the population of the area where pesticides were used in larger quantities. Several haematochemical tests were used in an attempt to differentiate between populations at different levels of risk of toxic damage, but without success.

Correlation between pS2 protein positivity, steroid receptor status and other prognostic factors in breast cancer.

The cytosolic levels of pS2, an estrogen-regulated protein, were measured in 100 cases of primary breast cancer and related to several conventional histological and biochemical prognostic factors. The data were statistically analyzed on the basis of two different cutoff point for pS2: 4 and 11 ng/mg of cytosolic proteins. pS2 positivity (cutoff 11 ng/mg) was shown to be associated with small tumor size (p = 0.05), a higher differentiation grade (p = 0.007) and a smaller number of mitoses (p = 0.004), but not with menopausal status, lymph node involvement, cathepsin D levels, or proliferative activity determined by the monoclonal antibody Ki67. With the cutoff of 4 ng/mg, the statistical significance was confirmed only for the number of mitoses (p = 0.03), which was also the most closely related covariate in multivariate analysis (p = 0.008). As regards steroid receptor status, a significant difference was observed between pS2+ and pS2- cases (Chi-square = 8.9; p = 0.04, cutoff 4 ng/mg). in conclusion, pS2 positivity, being preferentially expressed in hormone-dependent cells and related to other well-known positive markers, may either indicate a good prognosis or predict responsiveness to endocrine treatment.

A conversational program for hierarchic and non-hierarchic cluster analysis.

The theoretical basis and the features of some cluster analysis programs are described in this paper. These programs use as input data an N x M matrix. For the N' less than or equal to N set of individuals, the cross-correlation matrix, R = (rij), is then calculated. The dissimilarity matrix, D = (dhk), and the distribution histogram of the distances between each pair is worked out. Hierarchic and non-hierarchic clustering techniques are allowed. Using the non-hierarchic strategy, the non-overlapping clusters are then separated into different groups. The distances between these groups are calculated and statistical tests of significance are performed. In the hierarchic case, a dendrogram is drawn using an agglomerative algorithm. As an example the programs (written in FORTRAN, batch or TSS version) were used to classify human mitotic chromosomes.

[Cryptococcosis in a female patient with angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy and dysproteinemia].

A case of a 72-year-old woman affected by angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with dysproteinemia is described. She was admitted to the hospital for serious cutaneous lesions and dementia. The patient had been treated with corticosteroids for the previous two years. Cryptococcosis was diagnosed by cutaneous biopsy. Antimycotic therapy together with corticosteroid withdrawal cured the cutaneous lesions and improved her psychiatric symptoms.

Supernatant of human umbilical vein endothelial cell culture can favour in vivo neutropoiesis.

Umbilical vein endothelial cells are known to be able to produce interleukins and colony stimulating factors. In the present work supernatant of human umbilical vein endothelial cell culture have been administered to neoplastic patients treated with chemotherapy to reduce the iatrogenic inhibition of hemopoiesis. While no undesired effect could be observed, neutrophil count was favourably influenced by endothelial cell supernatant administration. Such data can be considered useful in order to reduce collateral effect of antineoplastic therapy.

[Mathematical models in epidemiology: Study on viral hepatitis in Italy (author's transl)].

In this paper a mathematical approach to the epidemics is proposed. The method is based upon a model able to describe any time-depending phenomena using the following elements: "class", "transition" and "related probability". The solution of the differential equations describing the model are obtained: first, by numerical techniques; second, by a Montecarlo simulation method. Deterministic and stochastic solutions which have been obtained, by applying the model to the study of viral hepatitis in Italy during 1960--1970, have been compared each other, to improve the model itself.

[Rubella seroepidemiology. proposal of a predictive mathmatical model (author's transl)].

This paper deals with time dependent epidermic behaviour of rubella. The hypothesis that ten classes of immuno-response (Stewart test) can be reduced to three is assumed (= low, intermediate and high level). Upon these conditions a mathematical model is developed and tested using experimental data measured during six years over 1288 subjects. Initial conditions, time-constants and transition probability for the model are also estimated from experimental data.
