[Effect of a serum inhibitor on hematopoiesis regulation: in vitro effect on RNA synthesis in bone marrows of rats].

Hematopoiesis is regulated by several hormones and protein factors, among them, erytropoietin (Ep) and granulopoietin (CSF: Colony Stimulating Factor) play the fundamental control activities inducing the differentiation of stem cells to red and white cells series, respectively. The action of serum inhibitors and cyclic nucleotides on hematopoietic process is not well understood at present time. In this work a rat serum-inhibiting activity was detected that diminished the in vitro [3H] uridine incorporation into rat bone marrow whole RNA. The experiments show that the inhibitory may have a platelet origin.

HLA antigens in brucellosis.

106 patients diagnosed as having brucellosis were typed for HLA class I and class II antigens. The number of healthy controls was 272 and 102 for classes I and II, respectively. 17 HLA-A, 31 HLA-B, 7 HLA-C and 8 HLA-DR specificities were studied. The most important finding was a highly significant decrease of the HLA-Cw2 antigen frequency in the patient group compared with the controls. The corrected p value was p less than 0.0001 (Fisher's test). This finding is compatible with the idea that HLA-Cw2 antigen could be a protective factor. No other positive or negative association was observed. There was no significant difference in HLA antigen frequencies between patients with and without joint manifestations. In addition, we did not find an HLA-B27 increase in the group of patients with brucellosis associated spondylarthritis when compared with healthy individuals.

Correlation between plasmatic and CSF beta-endorphin levels.

Fifty-four concomitant pairs of plasma and ventricular CSF samples were obtained in eighteen patients taking advantage of some neuroradiological or therapeutical procedures. A significant linear correlation between plasma and CSF beta-Endorphin levels has been found. The results obtained and those of other papers on the subject are discussed.

Enzootic Brugia infection in a two-year-old Colombian girl.

Mature male and female filarial worms were present in a lymphatic vessel near a retro-auricular lymph node removed from a 2-year old Colombian girl. Although apparently mature microfilariae were present in the uterus of the female, none was detected in blood samples (Knott's) of peripheral blood taken during day or night. The identification of the worms as a species of Brugia is suggested by their location in a dilated lymphatic vessel, morphology of adults, and the distribution pattern of tail nuclei of the microfilariae. This case is similar to another Colombian case reported from the Departamento del Santander del Sur, and suggests that zoonotic filarial infections may not be uncommon in Colombia.

Bioelectrical tissue resistance during various methods of myocardial preservation.

Twenty-one mongrel dogs underwent cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and ischemic cardiac arrest for 60 minutes. The bioelectrical tissue impedance, water content, and ultrastructure of the myocardium were studied and correlated with various types of myocardial protection applied. The animals were divided into three groups according to the myocardial protection applied: Group 1, moderate general hypothermia; Group 2, moderate general and local hypothermia; Group 3, moderate general hypothermia and crystalloid cardioplegia. The hearts from 3 normal dogs served as controls. After 35 minutes of ischemic arrest, the difference in bioelectrical impedance of the myocardium of the left ventricle between Groups 1 and 2 was highly significant (p less than 0.001); in Groups 2 and 3, a significant difference was observed after 50 minutes. The heart water content in all three groups increased over that found in the hearts of the control animals, but there was no significant difference between Groups 2 and 3. There was evidence by ultramicroscopic study of ischemic damage to the myocardium in all of the experimental groups. Damage was less evident in Groups 2 and 3. We conclude that measurement of myocardial bioelectrical tissue resistance is a sensitive indicator of myocardial damage due to ischemia and may be useful clinically in determining the need for and type of cardiac resuscitation, particularly following CPB.

[Changes in the expression of H-2 antigenic determinants in several sublines proceeding from the same tumor].

Four sublines of the chemically induced BALB/c tumour MCG4 have been obtained after serial intraperitoneal transplantation in syngeneic recipients and have been named MCG4-O, MCG4-A, MCG4-B and MCG4-C. The four subline have been typed for H-2 antigens in a complement dependent microradioassay with H-2 alloantisera defining H-2 specificities as well as with two syngeneic anti tumour sera: BALB/c anti MCG4-O and BALB/c anti MCG4-A. The results obtained showed a progressive loss of the foreign H-2 antigens detected in the primitive line, MCG4-O, with a simultaneous appearance of the appropriate H-2 antigens detected in MCG4-B and MCG4-C. Furthermore the immunogenic capacity of the sublines decrease progressively with the transplantation procedures, rendering MCG4-O and MCG4-A highly immunogenic and capable of producing isoantibodies while MCG4-B and MCG4-C are poorly immunogenic. The results could suggest that the primitive subline is heterogeneous mixture of (H-2d) are immunoselected by the transplantation procedures with rejection of the most immunogenic clones, which would express the foreign H-2 antigens.

Immunocomplexes and tumour growth. Detection of immunocomplexes in high and low malignant tumour sublines.

Two different techniques to measure immunocomplexes on biological fluids are presented. The first one is based on the inhibition of the antibody dependent cell cytotoxicity (ADCC). A competition is established between immunocomplexes and the rabbit anti chicken antibodies bound to chicken red blood cells for the Fc receptors of K cells. The second technique detects the presence of immunocomplexes by the inhibition of the cytotoxicity on a haemolytic system as a result of the consumption of the complement. Both techniques were performed in parallel to compare their sensitivity. The presence of immunocomplexes in the ascites of tumour bearing mice has been demonstrated with two highly related tumours (MCG4 O and MGC4 C) with different immunogenic properties. No immunocomplexes were detected in the serum of the same mice.
