[Behavior of blood amino acids after acute administration of glucagon in humans].

The authors have studied the behavior of Aminoacids (AA), GH, Prolactin (PRL), Insulin (IRI) and blood sugar (BS) after fast intravenous injection of 1 mg of Glucagon (G), in eight normal volunteers. The rise in BS levels soon after G. administration at time 10', 20', 30', 45', 60' prompted to consider the initial phase of the experimental to be under G predominance, although IRI did respond to the infusion with a sharp rise, at time 10', 20', 30', 45'. Glycine, serine, threonine, alanine, lysine, phenylalanine and arginine displayed a significant reduction already at time 10' or 20', when G metabolic effects were dominant, a selective G influence on these AA can be supposed. At time 45' and 60' tyrosine, histidine, methionine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, proline, decreased significantly and glycine, serine, threonine, lysine, alanine, phenylalanine, evidenced further reduction. GH and PRL were not affected by the administration of G.

Role of brain dopaminergic mechanisms in rodent aggressive behavior: influence of (+/-)N-n-propyl-norapomorphine on three experimental models.

(+/-)N-n-Propyl-norapomorphine (NPA), a potent agonist of brain dopamine receptors, influences aggressive behavior, but the type of influence depends on the experimental conditions. In rats, NPA increases aggression elicited by electrical foot shock, but decreases predatory aggression against turtles as well as isolation-induced aggression in male mice. NPA proves more potent than apomorphine in both the foot shock and predatory test. A per se ineffective dose of haloperidol (0.05 mg/kg-1 IP) antagonizes NPA in the rat foot shock test as well as in the isolated male mouse test. The relevance of stereotyped movements for NPA influence on aggressive behavior is briefly discussed.

Penile erection induced by apomorphine and N-n-propyl-norapomorphine in rats.

The intraperitoneal injection of apomorphine (APO) or N-n-propyl-norapomorphine (NPA) to adult male rats markedly increases the incidence of episodes of penile erection (PE). The effect is dose related for a dose range of APO from 25 to 500 microgram kg-1 and NPA from 1.25 to 50 microgram kg-1. Higher doses are progressively less effective until 1 and 5 mg kg-1 of APO and NPA, respectively, suppress even the natural occurrence of PE. APO differs from NPA not only on a potency basis but also in that doses of APO which elicit stereotypy no longer evoke PE, while a wide range of doses of NPA (12.5 to 500 microgram kg-1) produces simultaneously strong PE activation and stereotypy. The sexual stimulant response to APO and NPA is prevented by haloperidol (0.3 mg kg-1) and sulpiride (50 mg kg-1) but is not affected by domperidone (3 mg kg-1), an inhibitor of extracerebral dopamine receptors.

[Farmer's lung: comparison of the teleradiographic images and computerized tomographic (CT) images].

A critical and comparative analysis between chest radiograms and CT pictures in pulmonary fibrosis of various degree, occurring in farmer's lung, reveal that the latter are apt to give a somewhat more diversified informations about pulmonary changes as simple radiography. This would prove useful in evaluating the extension and distribution of anatomical changes due to fibrotic process, although as far not able to allow an earlier diagnosis.

[Experimental study on hepatic encephalopathy: EEG and blood amino acid findings].

The AA. describe a method of gradual occlusion of the portal vein in the rat to induce a hepatic encephalopaty. This method allows to realise a condition of hepatic ischemia and a portal hypertensive state accompanied by spontaneous portal-systemic shunts. These two factors produce a hepatic encephalopaty like in cirrhotic state or in patients after portal systemic anastomosis. A part from similar behavior at the beginning of the encephalopaty it is possible to define two classes of animals: one showing a slow recovery and one showing a transient and slight improvement followed at the end by the death of the animal. The AA. found a definite correlation amoung the clinica, EEG's, serum aminoacids and biochemical data. Probably the different anatomical and phisiological aspects of the induced portal systemic shunts and the different ways of hepatic rivascularization may determine the two different evolutions of the animals.

Alkaloids and procyanidins of an Uncaria sp. from Peru.

The alkaloid and procyanidin composition of Uncaria sp. from eastern Peru, used in folk medicine was studied. Five alkaloids have been separated and identified as pteropodine, speciophylline, isopteropodine, uncarine F and isomytraphylline, all belonging to the oxindole group characteristic of the Rubiaceae. Moreover (--) epicatechin and four dimeric procyanidins A1, B1, B2 and B4 have been shown to constitute the polyphenolic fraction of the plant extract.

[Coagulation disorders due to burns. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and its possible prevention].

Coagulation data were studied in 77 patients with severe burns divided into two groups (A, 45 cases, and B, 32 cases). Increased PDF, platelet deficiency, enhanced fibrinogen turnover, and paracoagulation tests showing disseminated intravascular coagulation were frequent in both groups. Platelet deficiency was significantly more frequent in group A (64.9% of cases) than in group B (37.5%). Patients in the latter group received small subcutaneous doses of heparin from the moment of admission.
