Thomas Laycock and a trophic nervous system.

A short introduction is given to Thomas Laycock (1812-1876), and attention drawn to the development of neurological understanding in the nineteenth century. The main text describes a postulated part of the nervous system, the trophic, which was thought to govern nutritive functions of the body. Thomas Laycock appears as a lone figure in British medicine in giving serious consideration to a trophic nervous system. His discussions are based on clinical observations but his theories are speculative. He devised an instrument (an aesthesiometer) which he hoped would identify abnormalities of the trophic nervous system. The demise of a trophic nervous system is described with quotations from Charcot and Gowers and the use of the word trophic in current practice is mentioned.

Some extrapyramidal motor signs in cases of undifferentiated amentia.

A group of 50 mentally handicapped patients who were without gross motor deficit and had never been on anti-psychotic drugs were examined for signs of Parkinsonism and compared with a matched control group of non-handicapped people who were also examined. There was a very significant increase in masking, positive glabella tap, absence of arm swing, rigidity and hypokinesis.

Immediate effects of improved hospital environment on behaviour patterns of mentally handicapped patients.

In 1972 three old hospitals were closed and patients transferred to a new hospital for the mentally handicapped. Four to six weeks before transfer, disturbed and a sample of non-disturbed patients were rated on a selected scale; they were again rated four to six weeks after transfer. The disturbed patients numbered 39 per cent of the total and both men and women shared a significant improvement, though the men did not improve to the same extent as the women. There was also a significant improvement among the non-disturbed patients, though this did not apply to the epileptic patients.
