Experimental observation of nonlinear synchronization due to a single wave.

A test electron beam is propagated in a specially designed traveling wave tube. It interacts with a nonresonant wave, and its energy distribution is recorded at the tube output. We report the direct experimental observation of the spatially periodic electron velocity bunching, and of a nonlinear effect on the electron velocity modulation: the synchronization of the particles with the wave responsible for Landau damping in plasma physics. The results are explained by second order perturbation theory in the wave amplitude.

Channeling chaos by building barriers.

Chaotic diffusion often represents a severe obstacle for the setup of experiments, e.g., in fusion plasmas or particle accelerators. We present a complete test of a method of control of Hamiltonian chaos, with both its numerical test and its first experimental realization on a paradigm for wave-particle interaction, i.e., a travelling wave tube. The core of our approach is a small apt modification of the system which channels chaos by building barriers to diffusion. Its experimental realization opens the possibility to practically achieve the control of a wide range of systems at a low additional cost of energy.

Long-time discrete particle effects versus kinetic theory in the self-consistent single-wave model.

The influence of the finite number N of particles coupled to a monochromatic wave in a collisionless plasma is investigated. For growth as well as damping of the wave, discrete particle numerical simulations show an N-dependent long time behavior resulting from the dynamics of individual particles. This behavior differs from the one due to the numerical errors incurred by Vlasov approaches. Trapping oscillations are crucial to long time dynamics, as the wave oscillations are controlled by the particle distribution inhomogeneities and the pulsating separatrix crossings drive the relaxation towards thermal equilibrium.

High negative charge of a dust particle in a hot cathode discharge.

Dust particle levitation experiments in a plasma produced by a hot filament discharge, operating at low argon pressure, are presented. The basic characteristics of a dust grain trapped in a plate sheath edge in these experimental conditions are reported. Taking into account the sheath potential profiles measured with a differential emissive probe diagnostic, the forces applied to an isolated dust grain can be determined. Two different experimental methods yield approximately the same value for the dust charge. The observed high negative charge is mainly due to the contribution of the primary electrons emitted by the filaments as predicted by a simple model.
