Prepared for uncertainty?

National health care reform legislation will affect hospitals in ways as dissimilar as hospitals themselves. How prepared are they? Hospitals & Health Networks, in conjunction with Premier Hospitals Alliance, Westchester, IL, surveyed 402 CEOs and chief operating officers to gauge their responses to anticipated changes and garner their opinions on how reform will affect their hospitals.

Into the black. 1993 Hospital Turnaround Contest winners.

Turning a hospital around takes a lot more than adjusting the financials, as the winners and finalists in the Great Comebacks 1993: The Hospital Turnaround Contest demonstrate. In every case we report on, the hospital being recognized has worked intensively with its community to reassess the services needed by its patients, build support for major management and delivery changes, and articulate the reasons for the strategies being used. Each of the eight hospital organizations we profile, which are spread across the country from Texas to Wisconsin to Maine to North Carolina--has put together its own version of success--in other words, eight lessons in innovation and progress.

Balancing complex choices. Integrating strategic, financial plans will test tomorrow's health networks.

Juggling capital needs and resource allocation is a formidable task for any health care executive. But what lies ahead poses an even greater challenge: achieving strategic integration in multiprovider health networks. The complexity of determining how best to allocate financial resources while addressing the competing requests of network members is the foremost reason why experts say that common ownership is critical to the operational and financial success of provider networks.
