Circadian temperature rhythm in intact, sham operated, gonadectomized rats.

Thirty-six CS rats (18 females and 18 males) have been studied: 22 gonadectomized (11 males and 11 females), 6 sham operated (3 males and 3 females) and 8 intact rats (4 males and 4 females). Three series of rectal temperature measurements have been performed: in the first one the animals were housed under strictly usual environment conditions (as far as the housing and lighting regimen was concerned); in the second one the animals were housed in metabolic cages in LD 12:12; in the third one the animals were housed in metabolic cages in DD. The mesor of temperature rhythm was always lower in ovariectomized than in intact rats, and always higher in castrated than in intact rats.

Circadian rhythm of rectal temperature in young and adult rats under different conditions of food access.

The circadian rhythm of rectal temperature has been evaluated in young (1-month old) and adult (9 month old) female Wistar rats. The animals were housed in metabolic cages in LD 12:12 having food in powder and tap water ad libitum. The single cosinor analysis showed high statistical significance (at least p less than 0.01) in order to circadian rhythm of rectal temperature. The comparisons of the mean cosinor evaluations of circadian rhythm in the 2 differently aged groups do not show significantly different parameters for a 95% of confidence. Two more groups of animals, of the same age, strain, sex and environmental conditions, have been studied. These rats had food admittance in the first 4 h of the dark span (1200.1600) only. In this case too, no significant difference has been evidenced between young and adult rats in any parameters of circadian rhythm for a 95% of confidence. Therefore the 2 pools of animals (young and adult one together because of the already demonstrated lack of difference between the 2 groups) in ad libitum and restricted feeding regimen have been compared. No significant difference has been shown between the 2 groups regarding mesor, while Hotelling's test showed significant differences for amplitude and acrophase.

Circadian and circannual aspects of the complement cascade - new and old results, differing in specificity.

Single cosinor analyses of several elements in the complement cascade suggest the occurrence of circadian rhythms in this immunochemical system. Some earlier results, obtained with less specific methods and reported as properdin, on reanalysis also reveal circadian and circannual rhythms in the aspects of immunology represented. The topic of the complement cascade as a whole is briefly reviewed in the content of modern knowledge.

The early maturation of the circadian system in newborns.

The time of maturation of the circadian periodicity in humans has been differently considered. The present study aimed to investigate the existence of rhythmic variations in the body temperature of healthy full-term infants just after birth. We studied 19 healthy term newborns, nursed in their cribs at environment temperature of 25 degrees C and moderately dimmed artificial lighting during the night. Continuous recording of body temperature was performed with a solid memory recorder (Fiamarker) connected to a disposable rectal probe, during the first three days of life. Data were analyzed by means of single and mean cosinor methods and spectral analysis. All the newborns, except two, demonstrated a statistically significant circadian periodicity of temperature (p < .001). Acrophases were distributed along the 24h since the synchronization to environment was not yet completed. A clear ultradian fluctuation of body temperature was observed in all 19 newborns with an unexpected fall of temperature every three-four hours. Our data show that the maturation of the circadian system is probably almost complete in newborns, but the adjustment to the new environment can be expected in the subsequent weeks of life.

Differences in some circadian patterns of cardiac arrhythmia, myocardial infarctions and other adverse vascular events.

BACKGROUND: Results from unpublished data on the incidence of adverse vascular events and from several published studies are reevaluated chronobiologically. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cosinor methods indicate 1. a circadian variation in the incidence of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PST), of broadly classified ventricular arrhythmia (VAr), and of atrial fibrillation (AF); 2. a statistically significant difference in the timing of the circadian rhythm of PST and VAr versus that of AF; and 3. a further difference in the timing of these rhythms from that in the incidence of myocardial infarctions (MI). Electrocardiographic records for spans longer than 24h show the extent of day-to-day variability in circadian characteristics of the given patient and indicate the presence of even lower-frequency components, notably along the scale of a week, that may underlie weekly and half-weekly patterns of morbidity and mortality. CONCLUSION: Beyond alterations in the about 1-Hz periodicity of the heart, predictable changes along the scales of the day and the week may constitute a clue to the etiopathology of a given condition and provide a basis for treatment timing. The assessment of unfavorable changes in the lower frequency components may provide a lead time long enough to prompt the institution of preventive, rather than curative, intervention.
