[Contraception and Gardnerella vaginalis. First study of the Italian population].

The association between contraception and Gardnerella vaginalis was studied in the population of L'Aquila. This research was conducted in the cytocolposcopic Center of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic, and the Department of Biotechnology and Biometry at L'Aquila University on 1212 females. Of the examined patients, 178 (14.7%) employed a prophylactic method and of these 104 (58.4%) used barrier-systems, while 74 (41.6%) used estroprogestins. Gardnerella vaginalis was isolated in 63 females (6.1%) that used no contraceptive and 19 (10.7%) that employed one.

Pericentric inversion of chromosome 19 in three families.

Pericentric inversion of chromosome 19 has been found in several members of three unrelated families from a restricted geographical region. In one of the families, an additional pericentric inversion of chromosome 9 was observed. Reproductive problems, multiple abortions in two families and a neonatal death in the third, were present. A review of previously described cases is included, and the genetic risk connected with this type of rearrangement is also discussed.

Spontaneous abortion in relation to the presence of hexachlorobenzene in the Italian environment.

This study determined hexachlorobenzene (HCB) levels in the blood of women who had suffered spontaneous abortions (120 cases) and women with healthy reproductive functions (120 controls). Samples were collected in 1984 during an epidemiological investigation into the relation between polychlorobiphenyl levels in the blood and spontaneous abortion in the women. Evaluation of the HCB data showed no significant differences between the groups, the blood of the group with spontaneous abortion containing 1.6 +/- 1.6 ppb HCB compared with 1.5 +/- 1.1 ppb for the control group.

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy. Description of a case of survival.

The Authors describe a case of acute fatty metamorphosis of the liver in pregnancy in a patient who survived and delivered a living female child. Clinical and istopathologic features, possible etiologic factors and possible treatment for the mother and fetus are discussed. The Authors, finally, think that acute fatty liver of pregnancy is more frequent than expected and that it should be considered in all cases of jaundice in pregnancy.
