An ideal tooth-gingiva relationship is important to aesthetics and function. Predictable methods of establishing an ideal tooth-gingiva relationship are described for exposing and aligning impacted teeth.
A viral agent was isolated from the fetal liver of an aborted equine fetus. The isolate hemagglutinated red blood cells from guinea pig, rhesus monkey and rooster. By hemagglutination inhibition tests, the isolate was shown to be antigenically distinct from parvoviruses of bovine and canine origin. Specific hemagglutination inhibiting antibody against the viral isolate was exhibited by 26 of 136 horse sera tested. The isolated virus showed properties compatible with those of an autonomous parvovirus including size, morphology, stability to ether treatment and heating to 56 degrees C, the presence of a 5300 base DNA genome, characteristic protein composition and density (1.405 g/mL). The virus was classified as an equine parvovirus.

An implantable artificial endocrine pancreas consisting of a coiled single acrylic copolymer capillary surrounded by a rat islets (1000/kg body weight) was implanted in 10 streptozotocin-alloxan diabetic dogs. About 5 h following implantation plasma glucose decreased from an initial mean value of 350 mg/dl to 150 mg/dl, and then to 100 mg/dl at 12 h. Plasma insulin increased to a mean of 39 mU/1 (range 23-83 mU/l) at 5 h in the recipient animals In addition a much improved plasma glucose disappearance rate (K = 1.9 plus or minus 0.3) with slightly delayed insulin responses was seen after intravenous glucose tolerance tests performed in 4 dogs at 7, 8, 10 and 18 h following implantation. These findings suggest that xenogeneic rat islets implanted as an artificial endocrine pancreas can improve glucose metabolism in the diabetic dog.
Pancreatic islets from adult rats, accumulated daily for a period of 2 wk, were cultured in artificial capillary culture units that were perfused with nutrient medium. Viability and functional capacity of these islets in this in vitro culture system has been shown to be maintained. The therapeutic efficiency of cultured islets was comparable to freshly isolated islets when assessed by transplantation into streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Intraportal implantation of either freshly isolated or cultured islets into isogeneic diabetic rats resulted in normal weight gain as well as complete reversal of hyperglycemia, glycosuria, and polyuria in the diabetic rat recipient. The normoglycemic state was sustained for more than 12 mo. Plasma glucose clearance rate (KG) were significantly lower in both the transplanted fresh or cultured islet groups than in the normal controls; however, the cultured islets were not less effective than the fresh islets. The results of the present study indicate the feasibility of accumulation of large numbers of islets in the in vitro culture system without any loss of therapeutic efficiency when implanted in vivo. Further improvement of this in vitro culture system can thus be applied in islet preservation for islet transplantation.
Implantable artificial capillary units containing approximately 1,200 allogeneic rat islets, or approximately 3,000 xenogeneic rabbit or human islets as an implantable artificial endocrine pancreas (IAEP) were implanted in streptozotocin-induced (55 mg/kg) diabetic rats. A total of 26 rats received IAEP containing allogeneic islets. Twenty were short term experiments which lasted for 12-24 h. Four recipients survived between 1-3 days and the remaining two for 4 and 11 days respectively. Five diabetic rats received IAEP containing xenogeneic islets. The four recipients of IAEP containing rabbit islets survived up to 4 days while the recipient of IAEP containing human islets survived for 8 days. Following implantation, a decrease of plasma glucose from the initial value of 500 mg/dl to normoglycaemia and a corresponding increase in circulating levels of insulin up to 100 muU/ml were observed in the recipient animals. Furthermore the IAEPs were shown to produce a near normal plasma glucose and insulin response to an intravenous glucose tolerance test. These findings suggest the feasibility of achieving amelioration of diabetes with allogeneic or xenogeneic pancreatic islets implanted as an artificial endocrine pancreas unit in the experimental animals which has the potential of future clinical application in man.

The clinical meaning of cardiac uptake of [18F]fluorotamoxifen was assessed. Tamoxifen, a nonsteroidal antiestrogenic drug for treatment and prevention of breast cancer, has a cardioprotective, estrogen-like effect in postmenopausal women. We conducted a pilot study of [18F]fluorotamoxifen to evaluate its clinical usefulness in patients with breast cancer. Significant cardiac uptake of [18F]fluorotamoxifen in five patients was found in the pilot study. We performed positron emission tomography (PET) with [18F]fluorotamoxifen. The intracardiac distribution of [18F]fluorotamoxifen was observed and compared with the patients' clinical symptoms, past history, and results of the electrocardiogram (ECG). None of the patients had a prior history of ischemic heart disease. Various patterns of [18F]fluorotamoxifen distribution were seen in the heart: one patient showed homogeneous distribution; two had defects in the lateral wall; one had patchy distribution; and in one the uptake was questionable. Non-uniform cardiac uptake may be related to myocardial damage. Cardiac uptake of tamoxifen suggests that its cardioprotective benefits may be related not only to serum cholesterol reduction but also to a direct cardioprotective action. Further experimental studies are required to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanism of cardiac uptake of [18F]fluorotamoxifen.
An outbreak of alcaligenes rhinotracheitis occurred on one premises housing five turkey flocks totaling 25,000 poults. Prominent findings were severe respiratory difficulty resulting from excess mucus in the nasopharynx, lachrimation, and tracheal collapse. Sinus and tracheal cultures consistently yielded Alcaligenes faecalis. An adenovirus was isolated and four flocks became positive for CELO virus by agar-gel-precipitin (AGP) tests. Mortality by flocks ranged from 4% to 48%. Treatment was unsuccessful and appeared to increase the mortality rate. The course of the disease was about 6 weeks, and recovered turkeys were marketed 1 week later than the usual date.
