Layer-specific input to distinct cell types in layer 6 of monkey primary visual cortex.

Layer 6 of monkey V1 contains a physiologically and anatomically diverse population of excitatory pyramidal neurons. Distinctive arborization patterns of axons and dendrites within the functionally specialized cortical layers define eight types of layer 6 pyramidal neurons and suggest unique information processing roles for each cell type. To address how input sources contribute to cellular function, we examined the laminar sources of functional excitatory input onto individual layer 6 pyramidal neurons using scanning laser photostimulation. We find that excitatory input sources correlate with cell type. Class I neurons with axonal arbors selectively targeting magnocellular (M) recipient layer 4Calpha receive input from M-dominated layer 4B, whereas class I neurons whose axonal arbors target parvocellular (P) recipient layer 4Cbeta receive input from P-dominated layer 2/3. Surprisingly, these neuronal types do not differ significantly in the inputs they receive directly from layers 4Calpha or 4Cbeta. Class II cells, which lack dense axonal arbors within layer 4C, receive excitatory input from layers targeted by their local axons. Specifically, type IIA cells project axons to and receive input from the deep but not superficial layers. Type IIB neurons project to and receive input from the deepest and most superficial, but not middle layers. Type IIC neurons arborize throughout the cortical layers and tend to receive inputs from all cortical layers. These observations have implications for the functional roles of different layer 6 cell types in visual information processing.

Astronomical constraints on the cosmic evolution of the fine structure constant and possible quantum dimensions.

We present measurements of absorption by the 21 cm hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen toward radio sources at substantial look-back times. These data are used in combination with observations of rotational transitions of common interstellar molecules to set limits on the evolution of the fine structure constant: alpha/ alpha<3.5x10(-15) yr(-1), to a look-back time of 4.8 Gyr. In the context of string theory, the limit on the secular evolution of the scale factor of the compact dimensions, R, is &Rdot/ R<10(-15) yr(-1). Including terrestrial and other astronomical measurements places 2sigma limits on slow oscillations of R from the present to the epoch of cosmic nucleosynthesis, just seconds after the big bang, of DeltaR /R<10(-5).

A comparison of the childhood experiences of convicted male child molesters and men who were sexually abused in childhood and claimed to be nonoffenders.

Eighty-four incarcerated child molesters and 95 nonoffender comparison subjects were interviewed. All of the nonoffenders and 93% of the child molesters had been sexually abused in childhood. The prisoners were more socially disadvantaged as children and had received more verbal and physical abuse. The prisoners were more accepting of their abuse in the sense of not understanding or accepting that it was aberrant behavior but rather thinking that it was a commonplace, inevitable, and consequently a normal part of childhood. Liking some aspect of the initial abuse also differentiated prisoners from the nonoffenders. Prisoners were abused by a larger number of people than were nonoffenders. Prisoners did not use the fact of their own abuse as an excuse for their own offenses. Abuse by a female was more common in the prisoner group. It is possible to see what constitutes sexual abuse to an outsider being construed positively by some victims, especially where the sexual acts occur in a context that includes affection and attention. This factor seems important to remember when trying to understand the replication of abuse across generations. The men who were least damaged by abuse were those abused by strangers in "one-off" offenses, which they recognized as wrong and from which they escaped without accepting responsibility for the adults behavior.

Follow-up data on the effectiveness of New Zealand's national school based child protection program.

In 1987, in response to concerns relating to the high incidence of (reported) child sexual abuse, the Ministry of Education and New Zealand Policy jointly introduced a national school-based personal safety program, Keeping Ourselves Safe. In December 1990, 252 children were interviewed in eight primary schools, selected as representative of the ethnic, economic, and social diversity of New Zealand society (Briggs 1991). The interview schedule was designed on problem-solving lines to establish whether children could identify and respond safely to a wide range of potentially unsafe situations. One year later, 117 of the children were available for interview using the same questionnaire. Children exposed to Keeping Ourselves Safe had retained and increased their safety strategies during that time. The variables of gender, age, race, and academic level did not affect improvement but the number of initial gains by children with highly committed teachers was almost double the number achieved by teachers classified as having low levels of commitment. Prior to using the program, children from low socioeconomic groups had significantly lower knowledge and skill levels than their middle-class contemporaries. Middle-class children also gained more from the program. The difference in gains achieved is explained in terms of parental participation in the school program.

Discovery and initial characterization of a new conditional (temperature-sensitive) maternal effect mutation in the axolotl.

The discovery of a new temperature-sensitive maternal effect mutation in Ambystoma mexicanum is described. The new gene (ts-1) was recognized when 100% of the eggs spawned by homozygous females failed to develop past early gastrulation when reared at 25 degrees C. Eggs raised at 10 degrees C developed normally to sexual maturity. A temperature-sensitive period during blastulation was identified by a preliminary series of temperature shifts. Histologic examination revealed that nuclear abnormalities, especially chromosomal bridges, characterized ts-1 embryos reared beyond the ninth cleavage at the restrictive temperature (25 degrees C).

A storefront clinic on the bowery.

Analysis of the patient population of a small storefront clinic on the Bowery of New York City has revealed the emergence of a new category of Bowery residents consisting of young, generally White, schizophrenic men with little history of alcoholism.
