Vascular stability and middle molecules removal in hypertonic haemodiafiltration.

Hypertonic haemodiafiltration is a simultaneous hypertonic (delta 550, Na 275mEq/L) low volume (7.2 litres) haemofiltration and hypotonic (delta 282) short time (180') haemodialysis. Reduction of the predialysis body pool of MM (-48 per cent) and small molecules (-33 per cent) was obtained. No relationship between vascular stability and MM removal was observed. However, a net UF of 20.5ml/min and a greater removal of solutes up to 1500 daltons mw were obtained with a three hours thrice weekly dialysis programme.

Salivary levels of thallium in acute human poisoning.

Thallium intoxication in a 28-year-old woman was characterized by neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms and alopecia. Treatment was started 4 days after poisoning and consisted of forced diuresis and administration of Prussian Blue at four daily doses of 5 g by duodenal tube for 20 days. Thallium was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in urine, faeces and saliva. Considerable amounts of thallium were detected in saliva, salivary concentrations being up to 15 times higher than urinary ones. Evidence was also obtained that only a little fraction of the ingested dose was excreted by the intestine during the hospital course in spite of Prussian Blue administration.

Computerized analysis of eye movements as a function of age.

Vertical and horizontal saccadic (SEMv, SEMh) and smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) were recorded in 66 normal subjects of different ages using a computerized system. No difference was found in SEMh recordings for the right versus the left eye or for gaze direction. In contrast, SEMv recordings of upgaze vs. downgaze showed a significant difference in performance index (peak velocity) and delay. SEMh and SEMv performance index and delay were significantly slowed in elderly subjects, although accuracy was not affected. SPEM analysis also revealed a decrease in velocity in elderly people indicating diminished tracking ability as a result of the aging process. These data suggest that senescence may influence some SEM and SPEM parameters. We thus emphasize the usefulness of having reliable normative data corrected for age.

Vitamin D receptor expression in human brain tumors.

Vitamin D receptor (VDR) has important effects not only on physiological processes related to Ca2+ metabolism but also on cell growth and differentiation. VDR is a member of the Steroid-Thyroid Receptors Superfamily (STRS). Work in our and other laboratories has shown that several other members of the STRS (androgen, estrogen, glucocorticoid, and progesterone receptors) are present in astrocytomas and glioblastomas. We now report the finding of VDR-like mRNA in human anaplastic astrocytomas and glioblastomas. VDR mRNA levels, as determined by a method, developed in our laboratory, based on the polymerase chain reaction, are significantly higher in glioblastomas compared to both low and high grade astrocytomas. We discuss the biological and clinical implications of our results.
