Antihypertensive effect of fractionated sublingual administration of nifedipine in moderate essential hypertension.

The magnitude and duration of the antihypertensive effect of nifedipine were studied in 7 cases of moderate essential hypertension. In a double-blind crossover study, nifedipine 10 mg or a placebo were administered sublingually 4 times a day for 2 days, and the results were compared. Each dose of nifedipine reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 14% both in the supine and upright positions. The antihypertensive action lasted for about 3 h and it was not cumulative. The reduction in blood pressure was associated with a temporary increase in heart rate. Administration of nifedipine 10 mg did not significantly raise plasma renin activity or plasma aldosterone. The drug was well tolerated and no side effects were detected.

[Angiodysplasia of the right colon. Angiographic findings in 10 cases (author's transl)].

The authors report on 10 cases of angiodysplasia of the right colon, diagnosed by superior mesenteric arteriography. The angiographic diagnosis is based on the following findings: abnormal clusters of small arteries, intense opacification of the bowel wall, early and intense opacification of the veins persisting late into the venous phase. The lesions were located in the cecum in 7 cases and in the ascending colon in 3 cases. Histologically, they are dilated submucosal veins and arteries.

Comparative studies on human and bovine nasal cartilage proteoglycan complex components.

Human and bovine nasal proteoglycan complex components were prepared in parallel. Some molecular properties of human and bovine proteoglycan subunits (PGS) were compared. Two major human "link-like proteins" have been characterized and purified; their compositions and molecular weights were very similar to those observed for the previously described bovine "link proteins".

Isolation and chemical characterization of two distinct "link proteins" from bovine nasal cartilage proteoglycan complex.

Bovine nasal cartilage proteoglycan aggregates have been dissociated and separated by dissociative density gradient centrifugation into proteoglycan sub-units and "link fraction". The latter contained mainly the two "link proteins" as shown by analytical sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The two "link proteins" were then separated by preparative gel electrophoresis under dissociative conditions. Molecular weight and amino acid composition of both proteins are presented.

Kinetics of chlorophyll fluorescence at 77K in Chlorella and chloroplasts. Effects of CCCP, ferricyanide and DCMU.

The kinetics of chlorophyll fluorescence at 77K were studied in Chlorella cells and spinach chloroplasts. During a first illumination, the rise is polyphasic with at least three phases. The slowest one is irreversible and corresponds to the cytochrome oxidation. The dark regeneration of half the variable fluorescence is biphasic, the fast phase being inhibited by 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea (DCMU) both in Chlorella and chloroplasts. The fluorescence rise during a second illumination is still biphasic. Carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) slows down the fluorescence rise in Chlorella but has no effect on the dark regeneration. It does not affect the fluorescence of chloroplasts. Ferricyanide which oxidizes cytochrome beta-559 at room temperature produces a quenching of the variable fluorescence and an acceleration of the fluorescence rise during the first illumination. Our results fit the idea of the heterogeneity of the Photosystem II centers at low temperature.
