[Sonographic diagnosis of holoacardius].

In the 28th week of gestation a normal foetus and a holoacardius were diagnosed via sonography in a biamnotic monochoriatic twin pregnancy. The growth of the foetuses was observed under continuous sonographic control up to the 40th week of pregnancy. The patient delivered a healthy twin by Caesarean section and the acardius was subjected to a postmortem. Macroscopic and histological findings in the foetus, the placenta and the umbilical cords are demonstrated. The pathogenesis of the holoacardius is discussed as being due to chromosomal aberrations and foeto-foetal transfusion syndrome.

Granular cell myoblastoma (GCM): contribution of three cases with genital involvement.

Granular cell myoblastoma (MGC) is an uncommon benign tumor of mesodermal origin of which no more than sixty cases with genital involvement have been reported. Among the genital organs, the labium majus of the vulva are the predilect site. We hereby contribute three new cases with a genital location (two in the vulva and one in the breast) and review the literature on the subject.

[Has intrauterine surgery using ultrasound a future?].

Based on three cases of foetal abnormalities (hydrocephalus, prune-belly syndrome, and unilateral multicystic renal disease) diagnosed and treated by intrauterine sonographic control, the article describes the technique, evolution and outcome of these cases. Two patients (the hydrocephalus and the prune-belly syndrome) died after delivery, whereas the third one lives in normal conditions. The different diagnoses and prognoses of this new surgical procedure are discussed. We think that hydrocephaly and renal obstruction have a very bad prognosis when diagnosis and therapy are not performed an initiated at an early stage. Unilateral disease of Potter-Syndrome is associated with a very good prognosis irrespective of whether therapeutic intervention is effected or not. For this reason, the intervention should be considered according to the compressive action that the cystic renal disease can exercise on the other kidney or lung.

[Thrombosis of the umbilical vein in the ultrasound image--pathological findings and review of the literature].

The authors present a case of thrombosis of the umbilical vein in a foetus in the 27th week of pregnancy, discovered via ultrasound diagnosis. The foetus presented with marked ascites and anasarca. Despite foetal death there were no visceral malformations, and no pathological criteria presented by the mother. The characteristic features and sensitivity of sonographic diagnosis in umbilical vein thromboses are discussed as part of the extensive pathology of the umbilical cord.

[Intrauterine diagnosis of holoprosencephaly].

The internal and external interorbital diameters are measured during pregnancy. A case of holoprosencephaly was diagnosed via ultrasound on the basis of the reduction of both diameters.

Ovulatory function after microsurgical reversal of sterilization in the rabbit.

Twelve does were subjected to induction of ovulation and the ovulation sites were counted in each ovary after laparotomy and a section in the isthmus of each left tube was performed, followed by immediate microsurgical end-to-end anastomosis. All the right sides were subjected to sterilization at the isthmical portion of the tube. After three weeks rest, the animals underwent induction of ovulation, corpora lutea were counted and at this stage, reversibility of sterilization was carried out in the right tube. Three weeks later ovulation was again induced and the animals were killed. After overall evaluation and comparison of the results it can be affirmed that neither fine microsurgery or sterilization, nor refertilization in the isthmical part of the Fallopian tube interferes with the ovarian function.

Cyclical changes in the epithelium of the fallopian tube. Studies with scanner electron microscopy (SEM).

By means of SEM the existence of cyclical changes has been demonstrated on the surface of the tube that is of paramount importance in the biology of reproduction. The frequency of ciliary cells increases under the influence of estrogens, producing erect cilius. Under the influence of progesterone, they are frequent once again, but due to the disappearance of secretory activity of the secretory cells. The days preceding and immediately following ovulation (days 13 to 17) the maximum cellular secretion is observed by virtue of apocrine secretion, characterized by the elimination of part of the cellular cytoplasm, and merocrine secretion brought about by multiple and coarse microvilli. The fluid that is produced during these days serves as a vehicle of sperm transport and prevents the descent of the fertile egg.

Scanner electron microscopy of the cervical mucus.

The cyclical changes that appear in the fibrillar structure of the cervical mucus are described using scanner electron microscopy (SEM). During ovulation the fibrillar mesh is formed of microfibers of 500 to 5000 A that form a large open network, that is not very dense noted by ample spaces (up to 40 mu) between the fibers. During the rest of the cycle the mesh is very dense and the fibers are very thick and less elastic.

How do oocytes disappear?

It has been study using transmission and scanner electron microscopy the mean procedures of dessaparence of the oocytes. On described three methods: 1. The necrosis of the oocytes. 2. The autolysis and fagocitosis by granulosa cells. 3. The migration of those to the superphicie and fall into the peritoneal cavity. Using the scanner electron microscopy in ovaries of fetus and newborn it seems the latest method to bee the most important during the intrauterine life. After the birth, this last phenomenon seems to disappear.
