Prostaglandin F in the fallopian tube secretion of the ewe.

Oviducal secretions were obtained from conscious unrestrained ewes throughout the oestrous cycle via indwelling cannulae and the content of prostaglandin F (PGF) was determined by radioimmunoassay. Levels of PGF of up to 230 ng/ml were found in oviducal fluids obtained from ewes showing regular patterns of secretion and normal cyclical ovarian function as indicated by plasma progesterone measurement. Relatively large day to day fluctuations in content were evident, but there was no consistent relationship between concentration and stage of the oestrous cycle. Concentrations of PGF in excess of 100 ng/ml were common in preparations where autopsy later revealed infection or tissue irritation, and the concentration of PGF invariably exceeded 75 ng/ml when the concentration of protein in the oviducal fluid was abnormally high.

Oxygen uptake, glucose utilization, lactate release and adenine nucleotide content of sheep ovarian follicles in culture: effect of human chorionic gonadotrophin.

A study has been made of the oxygen uptake, glucose utilization, lactate release and cellular content of adenine nucleotides of isolated sheep ovarian follicles (4-6 min in diameter) maintained in organ culture, and of the effects on these parameters of the addition of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG). The mean oxygen consumption of the entire follicles when freshly isolated and of the theca and membrana components was 0-56, 1-08 and 0-05 mumol per milligram wet weight of tissue per hour respectively. About 8 mumol of glucose was taken up and 16 mumol of lactate released per milligram wet weight of follicular tissue per hour during the first 24-h period of culture. This rate reduced by about 30% for each subsequent day of culture, but was significantly increased by the addition of hCG. The mean ATP content of theca and granulosa tissues was 4-6 and 2-8 nmol/mg wet weight of tissue respectively. There was no discernable change in tissue adenine nucleotide content or energy charge ratio during the 3-day culture period, and prolonged exposure to hCG was without effect. Untreated follicles produced both oestrogen and androgens throughout the culture period. The addition of hCG resulted in a transitory stimulation in oestrogen secretion, inhibition of androgen secretion, and a marked and sustained rise in progestin secretion. It is proposed that the increase in glycolytic activity following exposure to hCG may relate to the activation of the granulosa cells coincident with a transference of steroid synthetic capacity from theca interna to membrana granulosa.

[Isolated peripheral arterial ischaemia and medullary neurostimulation: case report].

Isolated peripheral arterial ischaemia (IPAI) is an unusual pathology of dialysis and peritoneal patients which represents the first sign of a complication of uraemia known as calciphylaxis. Recent studies have revealed an increased incidence of this complication. Risk factors are known but there is no consensus on them: elevated CaxP product, female gender, elevated serum parathormone. We present here the case of a 65-year-old man with 21-year history of dialysis, distal isolated ulceration and without any signs of severe vasculopathy. Our clinical diagnosis was calciphylaxis. In this case, the role of early PTX is not clear and the use of steroids is recommended only in non-ulcerating cases. The therapy gives good results but not in all patients. Electrical stimulation of the posterior roots of the spinal cord is an alternative approach to this case. We hypothesised that the electrical action, through cutaneous vasodilatation of afferent dorsal fibres and release of calcitonin gene-releasing protein, determines the release of prostaglandin E sub 2 that may positively affect the proliferation and activity of epidermal fibroblasts.

[The use of atracurium in subjects with chronic renal insufficiency].

Atracurium has been studied in 16 patients divided into two groups, the first of which suffering from chronic renal failure. The two groups were made standard for age, weight, type of intervention and duration of intervention. Arterial pressure, heart frequency, oesophageal temperature and blood gas were monitored. A neuromuscular stimulator was used to study the neuromuscular block. No difference was found in the treatment of two groups of patients and it is concluded that no contraindication emerges for the use of atracurium in patients with chronic renal failure.

[Electrophoretic and immunoelectrophoretic characteristics of serums of mice bearer of S. 180 (author's transl)].

The AA. start fully verified that neoplastic cells produce and pour out abnormal products, operating in favour of taking root of proliferation and penetration before, and with an action of mass in generalized phase of the illness. They have employed adequate immunologic techniques and antiserums prepared against plasmaproteins of the mouse bearer of tumour, succeeding in making evident with electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis the S. 180 of Cobs mouse.
