Oxidation of the perchlorotriphenylmethyl radical to the carbocation, and its unique abrupt reversion.

A solution of AlCl(3) in CH(2)Cl(2) reacts slowly, at room temperature, with perchlorotriphenylmethyl radical (PTM(*)), an inert carbon free radical, to give perchlorotriphenylmethyl cation (PTM(+)) quantitatively. However, by gradual addition of CH(2)Cl(2) into the resulting solution a point is reached where the PTM(+) reverts to PTM(*) instantaneously and quantitatively. A mechanism for this exceptional phenomenon is suggested. Some PTM(+) reactions, namely hydrolysis yielding quinonoid species and single-electron transfers with hydride ion donors, are reported and discussed.

Comparison of electron density properties in frozen and relaxed electronic distributions.

Two kinds of electron densities for several small molecules (H(2), FH, CH(3)CH(3), CH(3)NH(2), CH(3)OH, and CH(3)F) have been generated for a wide range of bond distances. The first one, as the sum of the electron density of the isolated fragments, and the second one by optimizing the electron density at each given geometrical disposition. A number of properties of this two electronic distributions have been compared (position of the bond critical points, electron density, Laplacian, curvatures, and local energies). The differences, associated to the bond formation, are found to be very important for most of the cases.

1,1',3,3',6,6',8,8'-Octachloro-9,9'-bifluorenylidene and perchloro-9,9'-bifluorenylidene, two exceedingly twisted ethylenes.

The syntheses of 1,1',3,3',6,6',8,8'-octachloro-9,9'-bifluorenylidene (1), its precursors, and the byproduct 3,3',5,5'-tetrachloro-4-(trichloromethyl)biphenyl (5) are described. Accurate structural X-ray data on 1 and on perchloro-9,9'-bifluorenylidene (2) are reported and discussed. Because of chlorine overcrowding, the dihedral angles between their two identical fluorenylidene moieties are abnormally large, the central-ethylene twist angles being 55 and 66 degrees, respectively. Significant out-of-plane carbon-chlorine bond bending is likewise exhibited. Their ESR spectra and magnetic measurements prove that they are singlet species. The exceptionally large bathochromic displacements of their UV-vis absorption spectrum with respect to that of their parent hydrocarbon are mainly attributed to bond bending and molecular warping.

A comparative analysis of mono- and disaccharide benzyl fucopyranosides.

The syntheses and X-ray analyses of two fucopyranosides, the monosaccharide benzyl 3,4-di-O-acetyl-2-hydroxy-beta-D-fucopyranoside, C(17)H(22)O(7), and the disaccharide 1-benzyl O-(2,3-di-O-acetyl-4,6-O-benzylidene-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-(1-->2)-3,4-O-isopropylidene-beta-D-fucopyranoside, C(33)H(40)O(12), are described. The different substituents induce small conformational changes on the fucopyranoside ring. However, the conformation of the benzyl group varies from (+)gauche for the monosaccharide to synperiplanar for the disaccharide.

Dynamic kinetic resolution of racemic gamma-aryl-delta-oxoesters. Enantioselective synthesis of 3-arylpiperidines.

Cyclodehydration of racemic gamma-aryl-delta-oxoesters with (R)- or (S)-phenylglycinol stereoselectively affords bicyclic delta-lactams, in a process that involves a dynamic kinetic resolution. Subsequent reduction of these lactams leads to enantiopure 3-arylpiperidines. Starting from racemic aldehyde esters, this short sequence has been applied to the synthesis of (R)-3-phenylpiperidine and the antipsychotic drug (-)-3-PPP (an (S)-3-arylpiperidine), whereas starting from racemic ketone esters enantiopure cis-2-alkyl-3-arylpiperidines are prepared.

Barbier-type diastereoselective allylation of alpha-amino aldehydes with an enantiopure 2-sulfinylallyl building block.

An optimized procedure for the diastereoselective allylation under aqueous Barbier conditions of a series of alpha-amino aldehydes with our new chiral building block (S(s))-3-chloro-2-(p-tolylsulfinyl)-1-propene [(S(s))-1a] to afford enantiomerically pure sulfinylamino alcohols in good yields and diastereoselectivites is reported. High levels of diastereoinduction can be achieved from alpha-amino aldehydes configurationally related to natural alpha-amino acids.
