[Correlations between the secular trend in sugar consumption in England and the secular increase of brain weight in adults in London between 1860 and 1940].

Significant positive correlations exist between the secular increase in brain weight of adults in London born between 1860 and 1940, and the secular trend in sugar consumption in the United Kingdom. These results of statistical analysis confirm once again the important bearing of excessive sugar consumption on the development of pre- and postnatal growth acceleration. The pathophysiological interactions of this development are discussed in the light of the experimentum naturae of the IDM (infant of the diabetic mother) and an attempt is made to explain the difference in brain weight increase between males and females.

[Changes in psychological performance parameters of concentration and critical flicker-fusion frequency with advancing age and in relation to diffuse cerebral arterial affections of the circulation].

Psychometric performance parameters and the critical flicker-fusion frequency are studied in various groups and in patients with chronic cerebral circulation trouble. Test d2 proves to be effective in the measuring of such impaired performance. There is a higher degree of correlation with Paul's addition test. A correlation between the performance parameters and the patient's age can be statistically substantiated. Among patients up to one third in the age group 55 and over show and affection of the cerebral performance turbances in spite of the absence of pathological clinical findings. The figure is twice as high in the group of patients undergoing treatment. The increased occurrence in old age shows the significance of pathological processes. There appears to be no relationship between critical flicker-fusion frequency and performance and stress factors. Individual correlations would support other physiological relations, such as an at present only hypothetical link with the psychic state (nervousness) of the test person. Our tables are suitable for practical purposes.

[Development of standard psychological values for measuring brain performance at different ages under normal and pathological aspects (author's transl)].

The studies have shown that especially those tests that put the person tested under intense time pressure (d2 test and Pauli test) are suited for detecting diminished brain performance caused by cerebrovascular and other defects. The d2 test has proved to be the most sensitive and at the same time the most economical one (5 min). On the other hand the findings made by Löwe, Eitner et al. show that ageing people suffering from cerebrovascular disease but still able to work should be assigned work that requires a great deal of care rather than work that has to be done under time pressure. The determination of the flicker fusion frequency is seen in literature as a measure of vigilance. But the influences are of a very complex nature. We have found no correlation between the tests conducted by us, the attention test, the concentration pattern test and the Pauli test.

[Treatment of hypertension with propranolol in internal medicine and general practice. A field trial with a simplified twice daily administration of Dociton 80 (author's transl)].

More recent investigations on the duration of effect and plasma half-life of propranolol suggest a simplification of dosage for the beta-blocker in the treatment of hypertension. A field trial with Dociton 80 twice daily as initial therapy was carried out in over 2000 patients with essential hypertension with relatively few side effects and confirmed the distinctly longer-persisting effect of the beta-blocker on longterm application. Including the marginal values, the response rate in this collective was relatively high at 73%.

Host-Pathogen Interactions: XIII. Extracellular Invertases Secreted by Three Races of a Plant Pathogen Are Glycoproteins Which Possess Different Carbohydrate Structures.

The invertase present in the culture fluid of races 1, 2, and 3 of Phytophthora megasperma Drechs. var. sojae A. A. Hildebrand (Pms) were purified until they gave but a single band, whether stained for protein or carbohydrate, after isoelectric focusing in flat bed gels. The sugar compositions of multiple preparations of the purified invertases from each race of this fungal pathogen were determined by quantitative gas chromatography of their alditol acetates. The invertases are composed of about 25% carbohydrate. Mannose and glucosamine make up more than 97% of the carbohydrate portions of the invertases of all three Pms races analyzed, but the ratio of mannose to glucosamine is clearly not the same in each race. The glycosyl linkage compositions of the glucosamine-containing mannans of multiple preparations of the Pms invertases were determined by GC-MS analysis of the partially methylated alditol acetate derivatives. The results of these analyses demonstrate clear quantitative differences between the glycosyl components of the different Pms races. The existence of race-specific carbohydrate structures in the differentially virulent Pms races suggests that these carbohydrates may be involved in determining the specificity of hostpathogen interactions.

[Etiology and pathogenesis of somnambulism].

The problem of somnambulism is discussed in this paper by reference to the present state of research in this field. A complex of conditions is assumed to underly sleep-walking and be triggered by various factors. Psychic or organic moments may trigger somnambulance if there exists a readiness for this form of reaction. The corpus striatum is assumed to control the overall coordination of stereotypic motor movements, which is made an independently functioning subsystem by certain states of tension in the central nervous system.

[Sugar consumption and prenatal acceleration. II. Studies on the etiology and pathophysiology of secular prenatal acceleration].

The pathophysiologic considerations support the causal relationship between the secular trend of sugar consumption in industrialized society and the development of prenatal acceleration, which is evident on the basis of epidemiological data. The excessive consumption of sugar and the other quickly absorbed "refined" carbohydrates enhances the hormonogenic effect of food which is also potentiated by the proteins. Together with the caloric overloading, provoked also by the excess in fat, characteristic for the affluent society, the excessive sugar consumption enhances in the pregnant women obesity and "protodiabetes" (PFEIFFER), in the predisposed child the tendency to hyperinsulinism with its consequences. In a prediabetic mother with normal glucose-tolerance the regularly repeated postprandial overfloating of the fetus with maternal glucose changes the feto-maternal hormonal regulation and enhances together with the overloading of substrate, i.e. energy and elements of biosyntheses, the accelerated fetal growth and especially the obesity of the large baby.

[Sugar consumption and prenatal acceleration. I. Studies in the history of medicine on the coincidence and connection of these 2 secular phenomenon].

A comparative historic evaluation reveals an astonishing world-wide relationship between prenatal acceleration, i.e. secular changes of birth-weight and percentage of "large babies", of distinct population groups, and their sugar consumption. They seem to be "connected" as they are regularly "conjoined" (HUME [46]). A statistically highly significant correlation between these two phenomena was established for Switzerland and Germany. The assumption of a causal relationship was confirmed by the abrupt development of growth acceleration together with the rapid increase in the per capita sugar consumption observed in an experiment-like situation in certain Canadian Eskimo populations in recent years.

[Fermentative degradation of 2-14C-mannose with Leuconostoc mesenteroides (author's transl)].

Mannose-2-14C has been fermented by Leuconostoc mesenteroides, CO2 ethanol and D-lactic acid were formed in a molar ratio of 1:1:1. A small amount of acetic acid was found as by-product. It could easily be isolated from the main products of the fermentation and it did not disturb further degradation procedures. The methyl-C-atom of ethanol, which was derived from C-2 of the mannose, had nearly the same specific radioactivity as mannose-2-14C. All other C-atoms of the degradation products were only very slightly labeled. Their content of radioactivity was in any case lower than 3% of the specific radioactivity of the degraded mannose. This procedure is applicable for the degradation of 14C-labeled mannose.

[Vital fluorescent staining of microorganisms by 3',6'-diacetyl-fluoresceine for determination of their metabolic activity (author's transl)].

By fluorescent microscopy and spectroscopy studies involving micro-organisms which were either viable or devitalised by heat sterilisation or gamma irradiation and could not be cultured any more, fluorochrome binding with 3' , 6'-diacetyl fluorescein was shown to be linked with the viability of a cell and a function of its actual metabolic state. The incorporation of diacetyl fluorescein into cells, its storage and hydrolysis to fluorescein mean active processes taking place at high speed. Viable cells are capable of storing fluorescein intracellularly, bound to structural elements. If the storage capacity is surpassed, it will be eliminated from the cell. The mechanism of this process is discussed. Devitalised cells are not capable of active uptake of fluorescein nor of its storage and accelerated hydrolysis. Beyond this, they are incapable of fluorescein binding to structural elements. There will be only a minor homogenous staining of such cells by fluorescein. An express method based upon the results is providing information on viability, actual metabolic state, morphology, and motility of micro-organisms within a few minutes and without affecting onward culturing.
