The fine structure of the cytolemma of olfactory receptor cells in the newt was studied by the freeze-fracture replica method. Two kinds of receptor cells were recognized, namely ciliated cells (ciliary type) and non-ciliated cells (microvilli type). The cytolemma of olfactory knobs as well as their processes from both types of receptor cells showed an abundance of large membrane particles 80 approximately 110 A in diameter. The large square aggregation of membrane particles, 0.1 x 0.1 micron to 0.2 x 0.3 micron in size, consisting of 50 approximately 100 cuboidal subunits, were found in the cytolemma of the dendrite. A structural model of aggregation is presented. The soma of the receptor cell revealed large pitted membrane particles about 140 A in diameter. These particles are possibly the morphologic counterpart to ionophores which have been proposed by electrophysiological studies.
Radioactive vitamin A acetate was stored in specific cells in the mouse adrenal gland. Radioactivity was detected in lipid droplets of fibroblast-like cells, whose distribution was from the capsule to the medulla. Their population was highest in the cortex. The morphology of these labeled cells was similar to that of vitamin A-storing cells in other organs of mouse (Yamada and Hirosawa, '76). Though functions of these cells are obscure, the fact that they are found in organs where metabolic activity of vitamin A is high suggests that they bear some role in the metabolism and storage of the vitamin.
A field emission-type scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to study the three-dimensional ultrastructure of frog sartorius muscles. Various preparative procedures were tested to seeks better specimen preparation for high resolution SEM observation. Procedures should be chosen depending on the information desired. The cell surface and intracellular organization of muscle fibers were best visualized when the tissues were fixed with tannic acid-OsO4 and torn after critical point drying. The basal lamina appeared as a continuous felt-like layer, onto which fine filamentous materials adhered. The true outer surface of the sarcolemma was not seen, whereas the true inner surface was occasionally exposed and exhibited numerous caveolae, membraneous fragments and fine filaments attached to its surface. In freeze-fractured and dried tissues, the cleaved sarcolemma showed numerous apertures of caveolae and T-system tubules. Inside the cell, the myofibrils showed a typical branding pattern of the sarcomere. Thick myofilaments were regularly beaded except for the pseudo-H-zone. Around the myofibrils the sarcoplasmic reticulum and T-system were also clearly observed. The results are discussed with special reference to the usefulness and limitation of the high resolution SEM in studying the ultrastructure of cells and tissues.
The functional abnormalities of the cells in the cardiovascular system in SHR were revealed by enzyme histo-cytochemical study. The enzymatic activity was usually increased in the area where the arteries branched and in proliferating cells in the thickened wall. Such was more remarkable in the distorted arteries with aging. Functional roles of these 4 enzymes were discussed.
Elemental analysis was made on the rod outer segments and fuscin granules in the frog eye by means of an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer combined with an electron microscope. The materials were prepared from the unfixed fresh retina by means of air-dried or freeze-dried cryosection, freeze-substitution, or the freeze-drying embedding method. An outer segment in the air-dried cryosection showed P, K, S, Cl, and Ca peaks. The dry section of freeze-substituted or freeze-dried embedded outer segment showed P, K, S, and Cl; K was lost in the wet section. The fuscin granules showed prominent peaks of Ca and Zn constantly, in addition to S, Cl, Mg, K, and occasionally Cu. The K peak was also lost in the wet section.
Localization of vitamin A in the small intestine of mice was studied with electron microscope radioautography after administration of tritiated vitamin A. The label was concentrated over lipid droplets in cells distributed in the lamina propria and the submucous layer. The cells were similar both to fibroblasts and to fat-storing cells in their morphological features. The name "Vitamin A-Storing Cell" is proposed for these labeled cells, including the fat-storing cell in the liver.

Twenty-four female rats consisting of 6 sets of litters were used for the experiment. After weaning, rats were divided into 4 groups and fed with 10, 18, 27 and 36% casein diet. Effect of protein nutrition on aging was examined from the anthropometric and biochemical viewpoint. The difference of growth in body weight, and that of the urinary excretion of creatinine and 17-ketosteroids observed in the early period of growing disappeared by the end of growth period. From 1 year after birth, serum alkaline phosphatase activity and serum cholesterol were also measured. However, effect of protein nutrition on these parameters was not clear due to the scatter of data. The difference in diet did not affect life span in the present experiments, but the effect of the variance of litters on it seemed to be significant between the rats fed 18% casein diet and those fed 10% casein diet. Rats fed high-protein diet had a great number of lesions in the kidney and hypophysis, and often an incidence of tumors.
