[Rooming-in at the maternity department. Results of a questionnaire-action].
The authors report from the Univ.-Frauenklinik in Giessen, where rooming-in was first introduced in 1976; the newborn baby's bed is now put in the mother's room. When 171 outpatients, who had never heard of rooming-in, and 81 patients in the maternity ward were consulted, the women agreed to a trial period for rooming-in. It was shown that more than 70% of the women would have prefered a clinic where rooming-in was possible to a traditional type clinic. This tendency was particularly strongly felt among women with a higher level of secondary education and among women who held the view that the fathers should be more involved in the family and in the upbringing of small children. The results of individual questionnaires showed that support for rooming-in was significantly strong on the grounds of interhuman relations; also, the rejection of the traditional mother-image was apparent. Reasons for the introduction of rooming-in, as well as the difficulties involved in putting it into practice are outlined.

[Quantitation of nuclear RNA synthesis in the ovary of adult Tenebrio molitor].
We studied quantitatively the uridine 5-3H nuclear incorporation in adult ovaries of Tenebrio molitor during the oöcyte maturation. In follicular cells, the rate of RNA synthesis is constant. In the oöcytes, the precursor incorporation is maximum towards the end of previtellogenesis, and low during the yolk deposition. In nurse cells, the RNA synthesis increases during the oöcyte growth and reaches a maximum value 6.5 days after the imaginal molt.
Proteins of Epstein-Barr Virus. II. Electrophoretic analysis of the polypeptides of the nucleocapsid and the glucosamine- and polysaccharide-containing components of enveloped virus.
Two series of experiments were undertaken to identify the topological location of the structural polypeptides of Epstein-Barr virus. In the first series of experiments, nucleocapsids prepared by detergent treatment of enveloped virus with Nonidet P-40 and sodium deoxycholate were found to be composed of seven polypeptides, VP2, 6, 7.5, 24, 27, 31, ANd 33, which ranged in molecular weight from over 200 X 10(3) to 28 X 10(3). Nine other polypeptides, VP 4, 7, 8, 10, 15, 16, 23, 28, and 29, could be identified in preparations of Epstein-Barr virus nucleocapsids, but the relative amount of this second group of polypeptides was less in preparations of nucleocapsids than in preparations of enveloped virus. The incomplete removal of these polypeptides from enveloped virus by detergent treatment suggests that some of these polypeptides may be components of the envelope or tegument that lie in close proximity to the outer surface of the nucleocapsid In the second series of experiments periodic acid-Schiff-staining and glucosamine-containing components were identified with similar electrophoretic mobility to several of the polypeptides of enveloped virus (VP 5, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 28, and 29) that were completely or incompletely removed from purified virus preparations by detergent treatment. The similarity between the polypeptide composition of the nucleocapsids of Epstein-Barr virus and herpes simplex virus was in contrast to the dissimilarity between the nonnucleocapsid polypeptides of Epstein-Barr virus and herpes simplex virus.
[Hypoglycaemic coma in Boeck's sarcoidosis (author's transl)].
The diversity of clinical manifestations of Boeck's sarcoidosis may also include endocrine disorders. One year after diagnosis of sarcoidosis in a 29 year-old female patient, endocrinological complications became manifest with amenorrhoea. The course of the disease was additionally complicated by hypoglycaemic episodes. Thorough clinical investigation of the patient revealed sarcoid involvement of the skin, lungs, liver and lymph nodes and an extensive retroperitoneal surgically-verified lymph tumour. After tolbutamide and in reaction to an intravenous glucose tolerance test the blood glucose was found to be very low, whilst the immunoreactive insulin was normal. Further investigation of the endocrine functions of the patient revealed normal functioning of the thyroid gland, subnormal values for the follicle stimulating hormone and extremely low serum ACTH and serum cortisol values, without any diurnal changes in these parameters. The clinical symptoms of the patient and the biochemical findings were regarded as manifestations of secondary adrenal failure due to sarcoid involvement of the hypothalamus and pituitary. Hence, treatment with corticosteroids was started. Hypoglycaemia has not since been observed in this patient and the other clinical features of (secondary) adrenal failure have disappeared slowly.

[Immunosuppressive effect of a human serum ferroprotein of hepatic origin, alpha 2 H globulin. Study on blastic transformation of normal lymphocytes in the presence of phytohemagglutinin].
The alpha2 H globulin, a glycoferroprotein, has been found in the serum of patients with malignant diseases. Its level varies according to the evolution of the disease. The activity of this protein has been studied on the normal lymphocytes cultivated in presence of phytohemagglutinin. This study has showed that 5 mug/ml of alpha2 H globulin can inhibit the blastic transformation. The inhibitory effect is proportional to the amount of alpha2 H globulin added as judged by the tritiated thymidin incorporation. The study of morphological aspects of the lymphocytes shows that alpha2 H globulin acts upon the synthesis of the cytoplasmic proteins.
[Influence of colchicine on the effects of acetylcholine and pilocarpine on isolated ventricle of the ammocete Lampetra planeri (Bloch)].
Colchicine inhibits the positive chronotopic effects of acetylcholine and of pilocarpine of the isolated ammocoete heart ventricle. This positive chronotropic effect is due to a release of catecholamines from the chromaffin cells of the lamprey heart. The action of colchicine, which does not result from its curare-like effect, suggests that acetylcholine induces release of catecholamines by exycytosis.

Quantification of CEA in human gastrointestinal cancers grown in in vitro long-term organotype culture.
Two malignant tumors of the human gastrointestinal tract (obtained surgically) have been cultivated in vitro in long-term organotypic tissue culture. Of these line AZ110 (maintained for 6 years) originated from a primary adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon, whereas line Z200 (grown for 14 years) originated from a hepatic metastatic nodule of a gastric adenocarcinoma. Extracts of these tumors and comparable surgical specimens were evaluated quantitatively for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) using radioimmunoassay. Both cultured lines exhibited CEA levels that were somewhat higher than comparable surgical specimens.
