Sex hormone binding globulin: the carrier protein for d-norgestrel.

The binding of different synthetic steroids, used in hormonal contraception, to Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) was studied by measuring their ability to displace tritiated testosterone from SHBG in a competitive protein binding system. Only 19-nortestosterone derivates had any significant ability to displace testosterone from SHBG, d-norgestrel (d-Ng) being the strongest displacer. Increasing the SHBG levels in women with previous constant plasma d-Ng levels increased these levels two- to sixfold. It is concluded that SHBG is the main carrier protein for d-Ng. The strong testosterone displacing activity of d-Ng might also explain androgenic side effects observed with d-Ng containig oral contraceptives.

The influence of norethisterone oenanthate on ovarian function.

Two-hundred mg norethisterone oenanthate was injected im into five women on the fifth or sixth day after the onset of the menstrual bleeding. The plasma levels of oestradiol and progesterone were measured during one control cycle before the injection and then for three months or until ovulation occurred. According to the plasma progesterone pattern the five women ovulated during the control cycle. After the injection ovulation was delayed in all the subjects. In two of the participants the first ovulation occurred around 55 days after the injection, while in two others ovulation was delayed about 80 days. The fifth woman did not ovulate until 16 weeks after the injection. The treatment did not suppress the plasma levels of oestradiol below the levels seen in untreated women during the follicular phase. It is concluded that the treatment with 200 mg of norethisterone oenanthate im can inhibit ovulation for an unpredictable time, but that the ovulatory pattern is restored within 12 weeks in most of the women.

Ingestion of yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus compared with pasteurized yogurt as prophylaxis for recurrent candidal vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis.

To compare and assess ingestion of yogurt that contained live Lactobacillus acidophilus with pasteurized yogurt as prophylaxis for recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV) and candidal vaginitis, we designed a crossover trial during which patients were examined monthly for candidal infection and BV while they were receiving either a pasteurized yogurt or a yogurt that contained live L acidophilus. Forty-six patients in 2 groups of 23 were randomly assigned to each of the study groups. At least 28 (61%) participated during the first 4 months of the study. Seven patients completed the entire study protocol. We concluded that daily ingestion of 150 mL of yogurt, enriched with live L acidophilus, was associated with an increased prevalence of colonization of the rectum and vagina by the bacteria, and this ingestion of yogurt may have reduced episodes of BV.

Microphthalmia--prenatal ultrasonic diagnosis: a case report.

Prenatal real-time ultrasonographic diagnosis of microphthalmia is presented. Diagnosis was made at 18 weeks' gestation in a fetus of a patient with a previous infant affected with the syndrome of cryptophthalmia with absence of septum nasi and ambiguous genitalia (Fraser syndrome). Recognition of microphthalmia as a part of Fraser syndrome and the easy visualization of fetal facial bones and orbits in the second trimester made the diagnosis possible.
