[First experiences with an instrument for TV display of digitally encoded text information for the visually handicapped (author's transl)].

An instrument was developed which allows the display, in enlarged form--especially for visually handicapped persons--of text information as used in modern data-acquisition systems such as writing automats, screen editing devices, and television text display (in England, Ceefax). With the aid of electronic character generators, the text is displayed continually, moving from right to left in one line on the screen of a commercial TV set. Rate of movement, size, brightness, and color of the characters (and/or the background) can be selected arbitrarily. We performed a preliminary reading test with visually handicapped subjects from a rehabilitation center for blind persons. The resulting optimal parameters for text display and the achieved reading speed with the system are discussed.

Provoked iris ischaemia in the rabbit. II. Histochemical localization of sodium fluorescein.

The distribution of injected sodium fluorescein in the iris and ciliary body of albino rabbits was studied in normal animals and in animals subjected to different surgical procedures. The study was performed with two techniques: whole-mount preparations and the paraffin-section method on freeze-dried eyes. Fluorescein distribution showed marked changes after surgical procedures as a result of reduced blood perfusion. In normal iris vessels no penetration of fluorescein was observed. The permeability barrier was impaired if there were ischaemic conditions in the anterior segment. The results were compared with clinical and iris angiographic studies.

Provoked iris ischaemia in the rabbit. I. Clinical and histopathological examinations.

Various surgical procedures were performed on albino rabbits, which impaired anterior segment blood circulation. Our early and late clinical observations showed a consequent development of anterior-segment ischaemia into anterior-segment necrosis. The significance of different surgical procedures for resulting complications is discussed. Histopathological observations showed ischaemic changes in the anterior segment: iris and ciliary body atrophy, cataract formation, rubeosis iridis. Even though changes in the anterior segment were not observed on biomicroscopic examination in the cases with ligation of one LPCA, histological studies revealed different degrees of sectoral iris atrophy with minor rubeosis.

[Haemodynamic problems and eye (author's transl)].

Haemodynamic problems of ocular circulation are discussed with regard to blood pressure measurment in the eye, giving information about the blood circulation of the internal carotid artery. Investigations on the choroidal and retinal circulations show that, between these two tissue layers, the movement of extravascular fluid predominates from the choroidal capillaries to the retinal capillaries. A model of the pressure relationships in both of these vascular systems is constructed to substantiate this hypothesis.

[Monitoring the progress of lens opacities in cases of senile cataract by retro-illumination photography (author's transl)].

A follow-up study of lens opacities, utilizing retro-illumination photography with the fundus camera is described. After giving technical details, results are discussed and possible errors pointed out. If evaluation by planimetry or other devices is not possible, a useful procedure is the evaluation of simultaneous projected slides by a group of ophthalmologists not directly involved in the trial. This is demonstrated by testing the effect of 1-hydroxy-pyrido-(3,2alpha)-5-phenoxazone-3-carboxylic acid on the progress of senile cataract in a total of 48 eyes. Together with slit image photography of Brown (2, 3) the method of retro-illumination photography of the lens presented in this paper is a definite improvement in demonstrating the temporal course of cataract development.
