Managing a group practice requires constant attention to financial and operational data to achieve a sustainable business concern. By identifying key performance areas, a group practice can gather, report, and analyze data that are readily available but often overlooked. Although performance indicators will not solve all management problems, the insight gleaned from historical and projected data trending, in addition to external comparison and benchmarking, can result in proactive analysis and problem identification, mitigating the troubling impacts of ignorance and surprise.

Assessing primary care's contribution to academic health centers.

Operating losses are being suffered by academic and private health centers operating primary care practices. The MGMA Cost Survey: 1998 Report Based on 1997 Data reports hospital-owned primary care practices receive an average of $80,819 in financial support for operating costs per full-time equivalent physician. However, little research has been conducted on the factors contributing to the primary care deficit. Moreover, few studies exist regarding the quantification of the benefit of primary care. This presentation seeks to demonstrate (a) the factors contributing to the deficit of a primary care practice and (b) the quantification of primary care referrals to an academic health center.

The telephone: managing demand.

The telephone system is the pulse of communication in a medical group. As customers demand increased access to their providers, telephone systems and their operators are becoming overloaded. Re-engineering is critical to meet this surging customer demand. This article explores new methods and applications of re-engineering the telephone system by managing demand, instead of the traditional solutions of adding more staff and/or more lines.

Measuring resource utilization in medical group practice.

The staff seems so busy every time you walk by the front office or pass through the nurses' station. The office seems to brim with patients whenever you stop by to chat with the medical director. "Seems" is the operative word--analyzing reality versus appearance may lead to some important insights about the utilization of resources in your practice. This article serves to define and analyze resource utilization in a medical practice by considering examples of staff and facility utilization.
