Childhood sex abuse in women with chronic intractable back pain.

This study explores the relationship between chronic intractable pain and histories of childhood sexual abuse in 112 women sampled from a large university campus health center. Fifty-nine (59) women with chronic back pain were sampled and compared with 53 control subjects obtained simultaneously from the same clinical population. Results noted that women with chronic intractable back pain had a significantly higher percentage of childhood sexual abuse experiences than controls. A new chronic back pain checklist was used.

Knowledge of blood cholesterol reduction in community residents.

This study examined the cholesterol knowledge of inner-city community residents, who are representative of individuals in lower socio-economic groups. "Cholesterol Pursuit," a 10-item cholesterol knowledge test distributed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, was administered to 316 residents in eight local grocery stores. The average percentage of correct answers was 65.8%. Community residents in a large, urban city were fairly knowledgeable about blood cholesterol reduction, but there were misconceptions concerning the importance of eggs, fish oil, and olive oil, and with foods marked "no cholesterol." White community residents appeared to be slightly better informed about reducing blood cholesterol. Identification of misperceptions concerning cholesterol will guide future education programs for these specific communities.

An adapted language training strategy in the treatment of an electively mute male child.

The present study investigated the usefulness of an Adapted Language Training Program in the treatment of an electively mute seven-year-old male. Training utilized a multiple baseline across behaviors single subject design. Four phases of treatment focused on non-verbal attending, verbal imitative responding, and functional language responding. Systematic attempts at promoting generalization of verbal responses across situations and persons were employed throughout the language program. A 90% appropriate response criterion was reached for all measures. Non-verbal attending and imitative verbal responding remained above criterion at the termination of treatment, but functional language responding regressed to below criterion. Generalization of verbal responses was noted outside of the training sessions.

A cognitive/affective empathy training program as a function of ego development in aggressive adolescent females.

This study investigated the effects of an affective/cognitive empathy training program on level of empathy in 24 aggressive adolescent females in a residential treatment center. In addition, the relationship between empathy and level of ego development was explored. Empathy was defined as a psychological construct regulated by both cognitive and affective components, interacting in a systemic manner to produce emotional understanding. Subjects were pretested on measures of affective empathy, cognitive empathy, and Loevinger's scale of ego development. High and low scores on the measures of ego development were defined by a median split. Following random assignment to groups, experimental subjects were exposed to four 1.5-hour training sessions directed at increasing levels of affective and cognitive empathy. Posttests revealed significant positive relationships between ego development and both measures of empathy. Training significantly increased levels of affective empathy, while increases in cognitive empathy were unremarkable. There was no difference between high and low ego development scorers in their ability to profit from training. The hypothesized systemic relationship between affective and cognitive empathy was also supported by the findings.
