Menstrual migraine: a possible pathogenic implication of platelet function.

It has been suggested that migraine is a blood disorder caused by a primary abnormality of platelet behaviour. We have studied in different phases of the cycle of 11 healthy normal women and 13 patients suffering from menstrual migraine: 1. The platelet aggregation induced in vitro by ADP, collagen and ristocetin; 2. The platelet sensitivity to prostacyclin (PSP); 3. The platelet content of 5-hydroxytryptimine (5-HT); 4. The possible correlation between these parameters and the plasma concentration of progesterone. The results demonstrate that in patients with menstrual migraine the platelet response to various aggregating agents is not modified compared to the controls, whereas there is a different response of the PSP to the modulating effect of plasma progesterone. Moreover, in the same patients the platelets have an increased capability of accumulating 5-HT during the perimenstrual phase of the cycle. This suggests that platelet dysfunction may play a role in the pathogenesis of menstrual migraine.

Register studies: data from four areas in Northern Italy.

Descriptive statistics derived from four psychiatric case-register areas are presented. Attrition numbers of long-stay inpatients and the accumulation of high-user patients in non-residential facilities are discussed, with the aim of providing tentative suggestions for a more rational planning of services. Similarities and differences among various areas of Northern Italy are also described.

Lomest psychiatric case register: the statistical context required for planning.

Descriptive statistics derived from a psychiatric case register are presented. They may be useful for a more rational planning of new services, and provide a preliminary evaluation of the effects of the recent Act (1978) which has abolished large mental hospitals in Italy. Each component of the 1-year prevalence rates has been examined closely, and the results have indicated three main considerations: abolishing the large mental hospital does not abolish the long-stay patients still living in it, and these people will remain a heavy load on the mental health care system for a long time; the new Act has halved admission rates, but the decline may be a positive result if in-care and out-care are sufficiently integrated; treated out-patients tend to increase year by year, and they seem more and more to be "young men and middle-aged women" suffering from minor psychiatric disorders. Finally, a closer collaboration between planners and evaluators is suggested.

[Effect of morphine on the exploratory behavior of mice].

The authors, after going carefully over the specific bibliography on the matter, report their results relating to exploratory behaviour in mice after administration of morphine (1 mg/kg i.p.). Exploratory behaviour was evaluated using an automatic recording hole-board, that simultaneously registered the locomotor activity. At the used doses, morphine did not produce variations either in exploratory behaviour or in locomotor activity of utilized mice, in comparison with drug-naive subjects. At the end, some possible interpretations are proposed about obtained results.

[Effect of naloxone on the exploratory activity of mice].

The authors after going carefully over the specific bibliography on the matter, report their results relating to exploratory behaviour in mice after administration of naloxone (0, 05 mg/Kg i.p.). Exploratory behaviour was evaluated using an automatic recording hole-board, that simultaneously registered the locomotor activity. At the utilized doses, naloxone produced a significant decrease of exploring activity and a significant increase of motility, in comparison with drug-naive subjects. At the end, some possible interpretations are proposed about obtained results.

[Effect of simultaneous administration of morphine and naloxone on the exploratory behavior of mice].

The authors, after going carefully over the specific bibliography on the matter, report their results relating to exploratory behaviour in mice after simultaneous administration with morphine (1 mg/kg i.p.) and naloxone (0,05 mg/kg i.p.). Exploratory behaviour was evaluated using an automatic recording hole-board, that simultaneously registered the locomotor activity. Morphine and naloxone simultaneously administered produced, at the used doses, a significant statistic decrease in exploratory behaviour, while locomotor activity was unchanged, in comparison with drug-naive subjects. At the end, some possible interpretations are proposed about obtained results.

[Depopulation of rural districts and mental health: the Sassim study (author's transl)].

The present investigation is a study of mental diseases in Sassim, a little rural district near Pavia (Italy), in which there has been an intensive process of depopulation during the last 20 years. In this communication the A.A. discuss the first phase of the study: they have investigated the demographic development of population from 1960 to 1977 and prevalence as well as incidence rates of mental diseases. Depopulation hasn't been only quantitative, but has altered the structure of population and has presented a quite different decrease velocity during the examined period; the trends of psychiatric morbidity seem to be associated with the distinctive feature of depopulation.

[Short-term memory. An experimental model].

In the present work we aimed to elaborate an experimental model to evaluate and quantify the short-term memory in experimental animals, in this case in mice. It seemed ideal to us the employment of a spontaneous behaviour, i.e. the re-exploration of the hole board, automatically recorded by animals which had previously explored at a 24 h interval. The data obtained show that, when re-exploring, the animals show a statistically significant decrease, compared to the previous exploration. It can be concluded that the animals had a mnestical retention and that it can be validly quantified. This shows the validity of this experimental model, in order to study the short-term memory in mice.

[Inhibitory effect of scopolamine on recent memory of mice].

In this research the Authors have studied the action of scopolamine on the memorization of the explorative behavior of the mice. They gave scopolamine before each of the 2 explorations made at an interval of 24 h one from the other. The results obtained show that in these experimental conditions, scopolamine cancels the short-time memory in a more complete fashion compared to the only administration before the second exploration. The Authors advance the hypothesis that this effect of scopolamine can be in relationship to its action on the cholinergic system.

[Effect of mescaline on cerebral cholinesterases and on exploratory behavior in rats].

In this study the Authors had the purpose to evaluate the action of a psychotomimetic substance (mescaline) on behavior (exploring behaviour and spontaneous motility) and on cerebral biochemistry (cholinesterase activity) of rat. The mescaline has shown to be active both on behaviour (increasing the spontaneous motility) and on biochemistry (decreasing the total cholinesterase activity). From the examination of the results of this work it could be cautiously assumed the hypothesis that the behavioural effects of mescaline are related (at least partially) to modifications of the cholinergic system at the cerebral level.

[Effect of LSD-25 on cholinesterases of the rat brain].

The indications for investigation on the LSD-25 "in vivo" activity on brain cholinesterases of the rat, have been considered. Indications of materials and method used have been supplied too. From the results obtained it emerged no clear evidence of a statistically significant inhibition of cholinesterases due to LSD-25. The results have been discussed and it has been evidenced that the lack of action of the psychotomimetic substance on cholinesterases could be only apparent or that the discrepancy between the LSD-25 anticholinesterase "in vivo" and "in vitro" action should be ascribed to the too scarce tissue levels which can be reached with the does utilized. Apart from the hypothesis, tending to explain the results obtained, it has been considered that the LSD-25 behavioural action, is not probably carried out thanks to a cholinesterase activity.

[Effect of scopolamine on the memory of exploratory behavior in the mouse].

In the present work it has been evaluated the action of scopolamine on the extent of exploration in mice, whose exploring behaviour had been already earlier examined. Such behaviour has been evaluated using a hole-board. The goal has been to detect the influence of the substance on the short-term memory of mice. The method used has shown to be effective. By the exam of the results of this work it can be concluded that the scopolamine at a dose of 1 mg/kg has an evidence effect of short-time memory in mice by causing a hypomnesia.
