Environmental release of living modified organisms: current approaches and case studies.

Agricultural biotechnology is being rapidly adopted as evidenced by the acreage of genetically modified (GM) crops planted and tonnes of product (grain and fiber) harvested. Concurrent with this technological progress, is a growing concern that the worlds biological diversity is coming under increasing threat from human activities. As such, ecological risk assessment approaches are being developed for GM crop plants as international agreements regulating the transboundary movements of these products are being implemented. This paper reviews the ecological risk assessment approach that has been used to date to approve GM crops to date. The process has been case-by-case, using a comparative, science-based approach balancing the potential risks and benefits of the new technology versus those present with the currently accepted practices. The approach used to evaluate and approve these products is consistent with the conditions and requirements outlined in the Cartagena Protocol.

[Dual-photon absorptiometry of the calcaneum in osteoporosis. Preliminary results].

Anteroposterior views of the lumbar spine are commonly used for the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) by diphoton absorptiometry (DPA). Values in lumbar vertebral BMD can be increased by the existence of a compression fracture, osteoarthrosis, scoliosis or aortic calcifications. Evaluation of bone loss at a peripheral site, such as the calcaneum (essentially trabecular site), could compensate for the principal causes of error associated with vertebral measurement. Calcaneal BMD in 195 control women was used to establish reference values closely correlated with lumbar BMD (p less than 0.001). The same study was undertaken in osteoporotic women. Preliminary results based upon 38 cases are reported here. Measurement of BMD of the calcaneum was correlated with vertebral trabecular bone density measured by double energy CT scan, indicating that this peripheral site offers a good reflection of what is happening at vertebral trabecular level. In contrast, calcaneal BMD was not correlated with spinal BMD, except if patients with osteoarthrosis and/or scoliosis were eliminated. Measurement of the BMD of the calcaneum by DPA is thus a simple, rapid and reproducible method for evaluation of a trabecular bone site which could be complementary to the measurement of lumbar BMD when the latter is falsified by artefacts.

Immunohistochemistry of amyloid-related neuropathies.

Studying eight sural nerve biopsy specimens of a biopsied trigeminal ganglions and peripheral nerves from eight autopsies, some of them retrieved 30 years ago, with a panel of antibodies against several types of amyloid revealed the presence of AF, AL of the lambda type, AA and ASs in peripheral nerve specimens while AB, AE, ASc, ASb, ACc, APrP could not be detected. Amyloid of the AF type in the endoneurial space was associated with loss of unmyelinated and small caliber myelinated axons. Availability of antibodies against respective types of amyloid enables retrospective identification of subtypes of amyloid and aids in further investigation and treatment of patients and their families. Thus, immunohistochemical analysis in peripheral nerve specimens is recommended when amyloid is apparent.
