Genetic studies of the population of the Isle of Man.

A sample of the Isle of Man population was tested for the following red cell antigens, serum proteins and red cell enzymes: ABH; MNSs He; Cc CwD Du Ee Ce; K k Kpa Kpb; Lua; P1; Fya Fyb; haptoglobin; transferrin; Ag; acid phosphatase; phosphoglucomutase; adenylate kinase; esterase D; adenosine deaminase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. The study comprised 219 blood donors, 338 secondary school children and 116 females attending the only antenatal clinic. The results were studied for intra-island variation and for their their relationship with other Irish Sea Basin populations. The total sample results were compared with data for England, Cumbria, Eire, Northern Ireland, S.W. Scotland and Wales using a genetic distance measure.

ABO Blood-Group System↗

Phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and group-specific component (Gc), isoelectric focusing sub-types among Zoroastrians of Iran.

A total of 243 and 236 red cell and serum samples from the Zoroastrians of Iran were sub-typed by isoelectric focusing for the red cell enzyme phosphoglucomutase locus 1 and the group-specific component respectively and the phenotype and gene frequency values were calculated. Comparison of the results with those of examinations performed on African, Asian and European population shows that for both the PGM and Gc systems Zoroastrians show similarity to western populations and differ from middle-eastern populations.

Carrier Proteins↗

Skin colour data from Nowshahr City, northern Iran.

Skin colour data from the population of Nowshahr City, northern Iran, reveal significant differences between the males and females on the upper inner arm and the forehead, and within each sex between the sites. Pigmentary variation in association with pubertal age is not found to be statistically significant. Close affinities in pigmentation with some neighbouring populations are also assessed.
