A new, simple, and reliable forensic identification system has been described. It permits the rapid and positive identification of victims of catastrophies such as airplane accidents, battles, floods, and fires. An electronic microprocessing unit directs a mechanical engraver to encode up to 13 alphanumeric characters on a small gold disk 0.25 mm thick and 2.0 mm in diameter. The identification chip is sealed in a 0.8-mm deep cavity prepared with a specially designed diamond burr in the lingual enamel of a molar tooth. The sealant is a stained composite material shown experimentally to be leakage proof, fire resistant, and readily detectable in teeth exposed to high temperatures. At the identification center the gold disk can easily be recovered and the victim positively identified without recourse to time-consuming comparison of dental records. Minimal training is required for the forensic personnel.

Four cases of a ganglion of the hip joint are reported. Besides the symptomatology and the clinical findings, special attention is payed to the anatomical relationship. The weak part of the joint capsula medially to the longitudinal traction of the ligamentum iliofemorale and laterally to the ligamentum pubofemorale was found to be the source of these ganglions. The most helpful diagnostic measure is arthrography through a lateral access. Therapy consists of resection of the cystic tumor, and careful closure of the hip joint capsula will prevent recurrence.
The operative results of 115 patients with pilonidal sinus are described. The patients were controlled in 1977, 2 to 11 years after surgery. Only small, non-infected pilonidal sinuses should be radically excised followed by primary suture and Redon-drainage. For extended sinuses and for recurrences the best results are obtained when the wound is left open or marsupialisation is applied. Pilonidal sinus-abscesses should be incised. This simple procedure resulted in primary healing in 23% of our patients.

A series of 7 young, healthy persons suffering severe vascular trauma and acute ischaemia of their limbs is presented. Standard vascular repair, although technically successful, failed to achieve satisfactory restoration of the circulation and the limbs remained severely ischaemic. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment at 2-8 atm (approximately 290 kPa) prevented the development of gangrene in all cases. This treatment is considered to be a very useful adjuvant to reconstructive vascular surgery in cases which come to repair late after injury.

Genic allozyme polymorphism and heterozygosity was studied in a large population of the evening primrose, Oenothera biennis, growing in North Haven, Connecticut. This species is a permanent structural heterozygote for the entire complement of 14 chromosomes, and is thus capable of accumulating and maintaining genic heterozygosity. A total of 11 protein species were examined, and these were judged to be controlled by 19 loci. Polymorphism occurs at 26% of the loci, with only two alleles being present at each locus. The proportion of polymorphic loci per population in organisms with normal meiotic systems is no less than in Oe. biennis, indicating that structural heterozygosity is not necessarily accompanied by a greater proportion of polymorphic loci. On the other hand, the average Oe. biennis was heterozygous at 26% of its loci, an amount considerably greater than in most other organisms. With few exceptions, all plants in the North Haven population had the same genotype. Since the species is a colonizer, it is likely that the population was founded by a single individual and retained this genotype by virtue of the genetic system.
