Bilateral atrophy of the mandibular condyles after maxillo-mandibular surgery for correction of a Class II open-bite is reported. Although a definite cause could not be ascertained, it is postulated that a biomechanical phenomenon based on increased muscle tension was the most likely causative mechanism.
The authors describe 3 cases of mouth-opening limitations and dyskinesia of the remaining mandibular movements, of different degrees of severity, arisen following a cicatricial retraction of the temporal muscle, caused by neurosurgical accesses to the underlying encephalic regions. Having kept in mind the afflictions that could cause an analogous symptomatology, the authors stop to consider which is the most suitable kind of treatment (surgical or rehabilitative) in these specific cases. For both kinds of treatment, corresponding to the specific indications, they propose techniques confirmed by their personal experiences.
An anatomical investigation on the vascular supply to "Pectoralis major", "Trapezius lateralis" and "Latissimus dorsi" muscolo-cutaneous flaps is presented. The AA. call particular attention to the vascular supply of the cutis going beyond the muscular borders. In this way we can determine the maximal width of the flap it is possible to achieve, without previous autonomization and without trophic problems.

The high frequency of permanent functional disturbance of the inferior alveolar nerve after sagittal osteotomy of the mandibular ramus is a disadvantage to which attention is always drawn in the different operating statistics. The authors, on the basis of previous experimental research, and in order to reduce the incidence of this disadvantage, have carried out sagittal osteotomy of the ramus in a series of patients by performing the splitting of the two cortical plates using a thin cement spatula as a chisel. The results have been extremely encouraging as the authors have observed only one case of permanent functional deficit of the inferior alveolar nerve and they have even noticed a very low incidence of temporary impairment.
BACKGROUND: After a review of the literature, the results of a clinical study carried out on cases of extracranial arteriovenous malformations of the head and neck, are reported. METHODS: Thirteen patients with extracranial arteriovenous malformations of the head and neck have been treated at the Maxillofacial Department of the University of Parma from 1995 to 2000. Five patients observed the onset in childhood, five in adolescence and three in adulthood. Arteriovenous malformations have been classified according to Schobinger's clinical staging. Four patients with superselective embolization, one with surgical resection and the remaining eight with superselective embolization followed by radical en bloc resection have been treated. The follow-up period varied from 2 to 5 years. RESULTS: No relapses have been observed in the cases treated with surgical resection and with superselective embolization followed by radical excision. Only 1 patient treated by superselective embolization had a good outcome. This treatment can be a good palliative in the treatment pain and bleeding particularly when surgical excision would result in mutilation or disfigurement, nevertheless it is necessary a careful follow-up since the lesion treated only by superselective embolization can grow quickly and begin bleeding and aching again. CONCLUSIONS: In personal experience, according to the literature, embolic/surgical management of arteriovenous malformations is not always the treatment of choice. On the basis of clinical characteristics of the lesions, different kinds of treatments (embolization, resection, embolization followed by resection) may be chosen to obtain favorable RESULTS.

Permanent functional disturbances of the inferior alveolar nerve after sagittal osteotomy of the ramus of the mandible form an increasingly common feature of the reported series. Reference is made to earlier experimental research in a description of a preliminary series in which this complication was avoided by cleaving the two cortical substances with a thin cement spatula used as a scalpel. The results were extremely encouraging. There were no reports of permanent functional disturbances of the alveolar nerve, while the incidence of temporary defects was also reduced.
The authors deal with a secondary TBC case of the mucous membrane of the cheek they have treated. They also deal with the present etiopathogenic hypotheses on this subject and the most frequent clinical symptoms.
The Authors illustrate 8 cases of submandibular and latero-cervical adenopathies of tubercular origin. They deal with the subject from the etiopathogenic and clinical point of view. In particular they consider the epidemiological incidence and the advantages of surgical treatment in comparison with medical therapy.
