Practice management in pediatric dentistry.

Good practice management in the pediatric dental office is not piecemeal, sporadic, or a series of random, uncoordinated activities. Instead, it encompasses the philosophy of the practice; is centered around the patient; and is a fluid, consistent management function. It begins with the pediatric dentist as the leader and continues in all phases of daily activity. It is a well-developed, highly functioning system. It results in staff and patient loyalty and high patient satisfaction. It is an ongoing, continuously active, evolutionary process. It permits a positive attitude of professional growth for the entire pediatric dental staff team.

How to achieve comprehensive teamwork in your pediatric dental office through total quality management (TQM).

Teamwork is considered the key to success in any organization. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a systematic process that optimizes quality and copes with change. The process includes customer satisfaction, as the ultimate criterion of quality; worker empowerment; and reliance on statistical process, rather than inspection and continuous improvement. Managers not only adopt new techniques but also a new philosophy, rethinking their roles to become leaders and mentors instead of bosses. Fourteen points, developed during several decades, are considered the cornerstone of quality and teamwork, and they can apply to what we do in the pediatric dental office. Together, these principles should be viewed as an ongoing process that can take up to five years or more and should be managed with the same emphasis as other systems in your office. The dentist, or leader, implements and takes part in the process, which will improve morale by increasing team spirit.

It will decrease stress and pressure, while increasing communication among those involved. By including key elements in your huddles, you can use this tool to personalize your treatment objectives and increase quality and service to your patients.

The public relations staff member performed numerous duties previously performed by many staff members. The results showed an increase in new patients for the six months studied between 22 percent to 111 percent. The number of Hispanic new patients was also compared and also increased significantly. Consideration should be given to having a public relations staff member to handle all incoming calls.
