Mucor rouxii cells were used to examine the possible antimycotic activities of four substances: phenolamines, phenylendiamine and quinone. These substances are original structures recently synthesized. Assays in plates showed that 10(-2) M of phenolamines and phenylendiamines give rise to halos of growth inhibition. Assays in liquid media using 10(-4) M of substances showed 100% inhibition of spore germination. Specifically, the phenylendiamine showed 49% inhibition on development of mycelium. In these cells the calcofluor distribution changes, suggesting alterations in cell wall. No inhibition of growth was found using the quinone. The activity for substances were evaluated using standard antifungal benomyl. On this basis, the substance phenylendiamine it is an antimycotic active. The mechanism of action is not presently known.
The Social Functioning Scale (SFS) is described, together with its rationale and development. The instrument consists of 35 items, and was administered to a sample of 320 adult patients of a health center. Social functioning is assessed in a semistructured, 30 minute interview. The patient reports the level of satisfaction related to his/her role performance in five major areas: occupational, social relationships, economic, marital and familiar. Reliability and validity have been established for the SFS. The reliability coefficients for all areas were over 0.80 (p = 0.01). A varimax factor analysis was applied and five factors emerged for the construct validity. This accounted for 52 percent of the total variance. The use of the SFS is recommended since its validity and reliability have been demonstrated. The instrument could be useful for Mexico, and also for other Spanish speaking countries.

The invasion of the Bolivian Jungle has brought the new colonists some unfamiliar diseases, among which we study Leishmaniasis. A previous study described the situation in Yapacaní. Departamento of Santa Cruz, a primary rain forest lowland area. We now focus on the characteristics of Carrasco Tropical, close to a hilly territory of the andean mountains. We studied 11 localities ("colonies") grouped as unions with different lengths of residence in the area. We considered males and females over 15 years old as "at risk" and studied in them all forms of leishmanial infection, through clinical and laboratory (smears) means, including the Montenegro Skin Test (IDRM). Cutaneous ulcers and scars were seen in 2.9% (10 patients of 339 at risk, 6 from "27 de octubre", a younger settlement, 4 from the older Tamboradas): mucocutaneous lesions in 3 (1 from the younger settlement); and skin scars alone in 10.3% (35 from the younger area). The only 2 females with positive findings in the study were seen in this latter group. Transmission is apparently associated with the primary forest which exists at the foot of the Andes in the area, which is visited preferentially by young men.
Duodenal diverticuli has been associated with biliary stones, specially in the common bile duct. Its presence alters the anatomy of the region of the papilla difficulting its identification and cannulation. ERCP was performed in 800 patients with suspicion of bilio-pancreatic disease, 60 (7.5%) of these patients (39 male and 21 female) had juxtapapillary diverticuli (single diverticuli in 52, 2 in 7 and 3 in 1 patient). In these patient cannulation of the common bile duct was possible in 43 (72%), only the pancreatic duct in 5 (8%) and no cannulation in 12 (20%). Common bile duct stones were found in 22 patients, papillotomy was indicated in 14 patients and was performed in 12, in 2 patients it was not possible to position the papillotomy.
The central nervous system (CNS) manifestations of the chronic autoimmune disease systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) are reviewed. SLE-CNS dysfunction is broadly divided into neurologic and psychiatric clinical categories. The distinct clinical entities within these broad categories are fully described. Diagnostic criteria employed to verify the presence of SLE-CNS dysfunction, including laboratory serum and cerebral spinal fluid analyses as well as radiologic and other multimodality diagnostic tools, are compared and contrasted with respect to sensitivity and specificity.
