Battering in pregnant Latinas.

Evidence suggests that abuse of women may be the most common form of family violence during the perinatal period. This battering is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and has physical, psychological, and social sequelae. Although some ethnic differences have been described in the occurrence of abuse, there is a paucity of research and culturally relevant prevention strategies and interventions to assist minority women. With both quantitative and qualitative methods, this study examined pregnant Latinas in three sites: urban Arizona, rural Arizona, and Mexico, to determine prevalence and type of abuse, level of acculturation, and self-esteem. Women were approached by a bilingual research assistant until 150 from each site agreed to participate. After informed consent was obtained, the questionnaires were administered in English or Spanish and read orally if the participant was unable to read. Focus groups with women recruited from each site by means of a return mail postcard provided qualitative information regarding their perceptions of battering, available resources, and how the Mexican culture influences this phenomenon. The women in the rural Arizona site reported the highest incidence of abuse and the highest levels of acculturation. Women in the focus groups discussed cultural reasons for violence and described helpful measures that could be offered to abused women.

CT attenuation values and enhancing characteristics of thoracoabdominal lymphomatous adenopathies.

OBJECTIVE: Thoracoabdominal lymphomatous adenopathies have been described as homogeneous and typically showing little enhancement on postcontrast CT. After observing pronounced adenopathic contrast enhancement in one patient with lymphoma, we prospectively investigated the CT enhancing characteristics and attenuation values of pathologic thoracic and abdominal lymph nodes in 25 patients with lymphoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unenhanced CT of the chest, abdomen and pelvis was performed in all cases. The enhancing characteristics and attenuation values of the largest node or group of nodes were evaluated at 1, 2, 5, and 10 min after a 100 ml intravenous bolus injection of contrast medium. RESULTS: On unenhanced CT the nodes were of soft-tissue attenuation (42 +/- 5 HU) in 23 cases and of low attenuation (31 and 28 HU) in 2 cases. The maximum enhancement was achieved at 1 or 2 min postinjection and was low (16 +/- 6 HU) or moderate (31 +/- 6 HU) in 21 cases and pronounced (61 +/- 5 HU) in 4. The patterns of enhancement were classified as homogeneous (no. = 23) inhomogeneous (no. = 1), and peripheral (no. = 1). CONCLUSION: Thoracic and abdominal lymphomatous adenopathies are usually of soft-tissue attenuation on unenhanced CT and can show slight, moderate, or even pronounced enhancement on postcontrast CT.

Efficacy of ajoene, an organosulphur derived from garlic, in the short-term therapy of tinea pedis.

The present report shows the efficacy of ajoene, a garlic-derived organic trisulphur, for short-term therapy of tinea pedis. The use of ajoene as a 0.4% (w/w) cream resulted in complete clinical and mycological cure in 27 of 34 patients (79%) after 7 days of treatment. The remaining seven patients (21%) achieved complete cure after seven additional days of treatment. All patients were evaluated for recurrence of mycotic infections 90 days after the end of treatment, yielding negative cultures for fungus. These results show that ajoene is an alternative, efficient and low-cost antimycotic drug for short-term therapy of tinea pedis. The fact that ajoene can be easily prepared from an alcoholic extract of garlic may make it suitable for Third World public health care.

Localization of chromenes and benzofurans in the genus Encelia (Asteraceae).

Phytochemical and microscopial analysis of leaves and stems of various species of Encelia showed a strict correlation between the presence of resin ducts and the accumulation of benzopyrans and benzofurans. Fluorescence microscopy of Encelia farinosa proved unambigously that these compounds are stored exclusively in the resin ducts and the surrounding cells.

Experimental circulating immune complex glomerulonephritis.

Based on some 40 years of experience in experimental and clinical immunopathology, the senior author examines the relationship between some characteristics of the immunological reagents (antigen and antibody) and the nature of lesions in immune complex glomerulonephritis.
