A infant with stenoses of the colon transversum and the sigmoid colon was successfully treated by transverse colotomy on the 31st day of life. A resection of the stenotic bowel with anastomosis was performed 8 months later.
Azlocillin (Securopen) and mezlocillin (Baypen) were given to 3 healthy subjects as intravenous infusion. The dose of 4 g was administered to each person within 5, 15, and 30 min in a randomized crossover design. Using HPLC the unchanged penicillin antibiotics were determined quantitatively, their metabolites were assessed qualitatively. The same specimens were also studied by means of a bioassay (agar diffusion technique). Both methods yielded similar serum and urine concentrations besides the urinary excretion of azlocillin. Here the bioassay measured higher amounts indicating an antibacterially active metabolite being excreted in the urine. No dependence upon infusion time was found. Since both drugs were tested with the same dosis in the same subjects, their pharmacokinetic parameters could be compared: mezlocillin, being more lipophilic than azlocillin, showed a higher volume of distribution and therefore lower serum concentrations. Renal clearance was the same for both drugs, but mezlocillin was excreted to a smaller extent in the urine. Higher total clearance and shorter elimination half-life of mezlocillin indicate a greater extrarenal elimination. The results suggest fast application of both penicillins. There is no pharmacokinetic reason for a prolongation of infusion times.
1 year after end-organ destruction in one ear about 70% of the neurons in Scarpa's ganglion are found to be surviving as compared to the contralateral side. They show different signs of degeneration, such as shrinkage, resorption vacuoles and loss of myelin layers. The peak in the distribution of layers of myelin is found, shifted to lower numbers. The loss of myelin layers in perikarya surrounded by few layers only could result in the appearance of a population of unmyelinated cells.

Computed tomography plays an important role in radiotherapy, especially in case of local recurrences after surgical treatment of a carcinoma of the rectum: it is important for the pretherapeutic diagnosis of the tumor, for the localization diagnosis, when the irradiation plan is established, and for checking-up the therapy effect. During the last two years, 37 patients with presacral recurrences were irradiated with high doses and examined before and after treatment. There was no difficulty to discern the foreign tissue presenting the density of soft tissue and to differentiate between recurrences and postoperative fibroses if the patients showed the typical pains. Normally a very good clinical result, but only few regressions of the tumor are achieved by a dose of 80 Gy within the rotation axis.

Disposition of oral brotizolam (0.5 mg) was studied in male patients with liver cirrhosis (patients) and in other patients (control) matched for age, weight, smoking and drinking habits. Absorption of brotizolam was relatively rapid in both groups with a median peak time (range) of 1.0 (0.5-2.0) h. Peak concentrations were also similar with median values of 7.1 (3.2-10.7) ng/ml in patients and 9.4 (2.9-19.0 ng/ml) in controls. Elimination half-life was longer in patients than in controls. The median values were 12.8 (9.4-25) h and 6.9 (4.4-8.4) h respectively (P less than 0.01). In two patients hardly any drug elimination was observed, indicating severe impairment of drug metabolizing activity. The prolongation of the elimination half-life was likely to be due to a decrease in clearance (45 ml/min in patients compared with 64 ml/min in controls), and an increase in volume of distribution (0.62 l/kg and 0.39 l/kg respectively). Median values of protein unbound fraction of brotizolam were 9.2 (7.8-10.4) % in controls and 12.4 (10.4-18.9) % in patients. Clearance of unbound drug was 612 ml/min and 380 ml/min respectively.

Faecal excretion of 2,4,5,2',4',5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (6-CB) was followed for 19 weeks in rats fed a control diet, or a squalane-supplemented diet, for up to 17 weeks. In 3 d after a single oral dose of 8 mg/kg of 6-CB, 20% dose was excreted in faeces as unchanged 6-CB, which probably represents that not-absorbed. From day 4 to 133 only an additional 2-4% dose was excreted in faeces by control animals. Addition of 8% squalane to the diet 2, 6 and 15 weeks after dosing resulted in a five-fold increase of daily 6-CB excretion in faeces independent of the time of beginning the treatment. Total excretion of 6-CB in faeces from day 4 to 133 was 3.6, 6-7 and 9.3% dose after 4, 13 and 17 weeks of squalane treatment, respectively. No adverse effects of long-term squalane treatment on body-weight gain, feed efficiency and organ weights were observed. Plasma cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly lowered. Independent of the duration of treatment, the livers of rats fed the squalane-supplemented diet contained 40-50 micrograms/g squalane. Within the limits of detection no squalane could be found in lungs, kidneys, abdominal fat, spleen and blood. It is concluded that 6-CB elimination can be enhanced by oral treatment with squalane even a long time after uptake of the poison. As there was no alteration in the tissue distribution of 6-CB, the 6-CB excreted after squalane treatment probably originates from all tissues.
By using dimethylsulfoxide (0.7 mol/l) a technique of cryoconservation of thrombocyte concentrates was elaborated, with own material-technological possibilities being taken into consideration. In comparison to fresh thrombocytes the results of parameters tested in vitro reveal a mean functional ability of 50%. The survival time of cells stored in this way in vivo may be compared with fresh cells. On this basis HLA-typed single-donor pools could be established for clinical application.
ACD-AG blood with 2 different initial concentrations of adenine and guanosine--both 0.25 and 0.5 mmol/l, respectively--has been studied by using 13 parameters. Differences could not be found in 11 parameters, among them ATP and 2,3-P2G content and the number of microaggregates. The formation of lactate and the hemolyses rate were slightly increased during 6 weeks. But the mean hemolysis rate was below 1%. A sufficient maintenance of red cell metabolism at lower adenine and guanosine concentrations as found in ACD-AG blood can also be supposed for the preservation of buffy coat-free red cell concentrates.
Only few patients are able to exactly maintain during the irradiation a given position of the head without fixation. However, every movement of the head leads to a dose decrease up to 50% within the target volume. Today, fixation and reproducible field adjustment are the conditions of curative radiotherapy. The Würzburg model is presented.

Long-term modifications of the mucous membrane after exclusive radiotherapy of malignant tumors are of great interest. Sixteen patients with malignant tumors of the epipharynx could be checked up after exclusive radiotherapy. The treatment had been passed for more than five years. The examinations showed that the essential troubles, i.e. the general xerostomia was due to long-term modifications of the mucous membrane in the nose and epipharynx. The endoscopic findings and the results of histological examination of tissue specimens are reported, compared to the indications of literature, and discussed.
In five female healthy volunteers the influence of dietary fiber (wheat bran or carob seed flour) on absorption of digoxin was investigated. Five minutes after ingestion of a formula diet alone or in combination with wheat bran or carob seed flour 0,8 mg beta-acetyldigoxin was given per os. The plasmaconcentration-time curve over eight hours, the area under curve and the cumulative urinary excretion were not changed significantly. It was concluded that there is no influence of dietary fiber on rate or degree of digoxin-absorption.
