Umbilical cord knots and encirclements.

Although cord knots and/or encirclements account for 1 in 10 stillbirths of infants weighing 2,500 g or more, no problem due to this cause was encountered in a prospective study of 1,115 vaginal deliveries. In this study there were 6 cases of cord knot (0.5%) and 158 of cord encirclement (14.2%). The range of cord length was 27-122 cm, the 10th, 50th and 90th percentiles being 40, 52 and 69 cm respectively. In this study there was no clinical warning (fetal distress) of cord encirclement or knot during pregnancy, labour or delivery.

Cryosurgery for basal cell carcinoma of the eyelids and nose: five-year experience.

Eighty-seven basal cell carcinomas of the eyelid and 155 of the nose were treated by cryosurgery. Complications were classified as early, intermediate, and late; severe complications were few in number. Three recurrences were noted on the eyelid and four on the nose. Cure rate was not calculated, because of short-term follow-up. Cosmetic results were excellent on the lid and less predictable on the nose. Additional advantages of cryosurgical technic concerning cost and convenience are discussed.

Squamous cell carcinoma. Case report of an unusually aggressive skin cancer.

A squamous cell carcinoma developed on the chin of a seventy-five year old woman of Irish extraction. This tumor had recurred following standard means of therapy and resisted treatment by chemosurgery. The patient had used a cream containing 5-fluorouracil for several years prior to the appearance of this tumor. The increased incidence of skin cancer and its possible cause is briefly discussed and the role of immunobiologic factors in the development of squamous cell carcinomas is mentioned.

Pyoderma gangrenosum with carcinoid tumor.

A patient with the classic lesions of pyoderma gangrenosum was found on autopsy to have a carcinoid tumor of the ileum. The simultaneous occurrence of a carcinoid tumor with pyoderma gangrenosum is interesting because both conditions are associated with immunologic defects.
